Hello, my favorite Tuesday peeps! What a wild weather weekend we had! If you get any sort of updates from the Pacific Northwest, you’ll know that we were hit with what they call a “river aloft” – which means lots and lots and lots of rain. And wind. Not a great combo. I did snag this beautiful sunrise pic midweek last week, just before the incessant rains started to roll in just in time for the weekend:

I had to do my bi-monthly grocery shopping on Saturday – when I was waiting for my grocery pickup at Safeway (my last stop of the day), it was like the heavens opened up and the rain was coming down so hard it was super loud in the car. I really felt bad for the poor grocery pickup people running groceries out to people’s cars. It was nuts!

I pay the little bit extra to have my groceries brought out in their thick (recyclable) plastic grocery bags rather than have them bring everything out and stand at the back of my car loading them into my reusable grocery totes. For one, there have been times when the cold stuff was put in a non-cold bag, and the non-cold stuff put in the cold bags…you get my drift.

Plus, I keep track of what I put in those bags so when I get home, putting everything away can be much faster. 😅

Usually, I pull off to a non-busy section of the parking lot to ‘re-bag’ my groceries before heading home. Not this time! I decided to make tracks and head home (making sure not to crank up the heat, so my ice cream wouldn’t melt, since it was a 40-minute drive home).

Murphy’s Law, about 5 minutes into my homeward-bound trip, I drove into sunshine and blue sky. But I knew time was of the essence, since the storm I was just in the middle of was heading north – the same direction I was heading. That meant I needed to make sure I got home so the hubby could unload the car for me without getting soaked. Mission accomplished!

Shortly after all the groceries were safely in the house, the skies opened up at our house. Torrential downpours, along with lots of water falling from the sky, are not conducive to keeping the lights on. To that end, the storm got stormier, and Mother Nature decided we needed a show, so thunder and lightning prevailed, sending the dogs scurrying into hiding.

I had just gotten the groceries put away and got settled at my desk to get a couple of work things done just before 3:30 pm on Saturday, when another round of lightning struck, and we heard the loudest boom ever… then the power went out.

We rarely get thunderstorms here in the PNW, so of course this doozie of one had to wreak havoc on our power. A huge chunk of our county was out. Ironically, half our town was still energized—from our deck, with our awesome view of our tiny town, it was crazy to see lights on the other side of town, but pure darkness on our side.

The longest our power has been out due to severe storms in the past was, I believe, 4 hours. This one lasted just over 7.5 hours. I know, right? I felt bad for the linemen who had to be out in the crazy weather trying to get everyone’s power back online. And of course Murphy and his Law were in fine form – the power came back on at the exact moment we were all ready to head to bed.

I also realized since it’s getting to be that time of year, I really need to organize my candles, batteries, charging bricks and flashlights so we don’t have to fumble in the dark. This was the first time we had a power outage that started when it was still light out, then lasted well into the pitch dark of the night. The hubby once again said he’s seriously contemplating getting a generator.

You know he’ll invoke Murphy’s Law if he does, and we’ll never end up needing it, like what happened when we finally got one while living in Pennsylvania. 😆

Then, in a twisted Mother Nature or Murphy’s Law way, we were in the middle of eating lunch on Sunday when the power went out again. This time it wasn’t stormy out – in fact, while it rained earlier, the sun had decided to make an appearance, so it was confounding to say the least.

Luckily this time it only lasted just over an hour, so it wasn’t as traumatizing. 😂 The rest of the day was rain/sun/rain/sun/rain/sun. I think we’re getting a break for the next few days – the rain will return just in time for Halloween. Poor kids who’ll be out trick or treating!

At least I got to find out firsthand how well my new car does in wild windy wet weather – handles so much better than my Juke did! So much safer! I’m very happy with that. I have to drop it off next Sunday so the Cadillac dealer can do the repair on the non-functioning passenger seat, so I’ll have a loaner for either a few days or a couple of weeks. I’m hoping it’s the former not the latter…fingers crossed! 🤞🏼

  1. Heeheehee! Feral hyperglycemic werewolf, this is too good.

One thing I regret about our house is no carport and back door straight to the kitchen from said carport. If I were house shopping over again, I’d put that at the top of the list here in the rainy swamps. There’s nothing like not getting drowned when you get out of the car.

Thanks for all the laughs, and I’m praying your car comes back to you fixed and almost before you knew it was gone.
