Hello my favorite Monday peeps! And Happy Cinco de Mayo!
Meanwhile, since it is Monday, you know that Monday means music! This week’s theme is “Things in a song that make you think of May”. Let’s get this May party started!
Let’s start with a song that works for this week’s theme; not many songs by the wildly popular boy band that were released in the 2000s earned as much radio play as this song. While not explicitly one of the songs about spring that reflect on the change of seasons or even new beginnings, this catchy tune has another claim to the season.
With the inflection of the lead singer’s voice, the chorus is widely sung as “it’s gonna be May”, landing this hit song squarely in the realm of a springtime tune that is hard to forget.
Get ready to dance, here’s NSYNC with “It’s Gonna Be Me (It’s Gonna Be May)”:
Next up, another song that reminds me of May (the title for sure) with a beautiful cover of a Dolly Parton song by this sibling trio. This song was Dolly’s “song of deliverance,” coming out of the pain from her break with longtime musical and business partner Porter Wagoner.
Parton left Wagoner’s band in 1974 to pursue a more mainstream pop direction; Wagoner responded by taking legal action, and the next couple of years were reportedly painful for both performers. This song was written as Parton felt the figurative clouds lifting, as the fruits of her sacrifices of the previous few years were becoming apparent.
Give a listen to Track45 with “Light of a Clear Blue Morning”:
Next up, we’re going way back to 1964 for this familiar hit, which is considered this group’s ‘signature song’, and became one of Motown’s best-known and most successful singles. In 2004, this song was ranked number 88 on Rolling Stone‘s list of “The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time”. The song was re-ranked and moved to number 43 in the 2021 edition. It definitely fits this week’s theme with the lyrics “I’ve got the month of May”. 😉
Get ready for goosebumps (and sing along, won’t you?) here’s The Temptations with “My Girl”:
Last but certainly not least is a magical duet of this artist with her 9-year-old daughter at the time that definitely reminds me of the month of May, what with all the sunshine we’re currently enjoying. This song was released back in February 2021 during the COVID pandemic; the sweet song looks forward to a brighter future when the lockdown is over. The artist said:
“We all know this year has been different and challenging and at times terrifying and tumultuous and angsty and all the things. And I personally find comfort in music, I find comfort in song, I love singing with my daughter and my son.”
The song was recorded at their home, because “…it made us feel happy and so we’re gonna put it out for no other reason than that we hope that the song makes you feel happy.”
Or, you know, magical. 😁
Get ready for more goosebumps, here’s P!nk and Willow Sage Hart with “Cover Me In Sunshine”:
That’s a wrap for this week – have a great Monday! See you on the dance floor!
Now, onto the particulars of Monday’s Music Move’s Me:
I have the supreme honor and privilege of being a co-host with the inimitable Xmas Dolly and our musical cohort, the awesome Cathy from Curious as a CAThy, and Alana of Ramblin’ with AM!
Want to join in the fun? It’s easy – just find a tune that rocks your boat, post it and link up – don’t forget to grab Xmas Dolly…er, um, I mean her button…over at her place here. Check out Xmas Dolly’s sidebar for the random themes we sport each week – and you can always ask for a specific theme of music you like, too. Check out the other music lovahs and let’s jam!
I don’t remember song you shared by Dolly Parton covered by Track45 but sure do appreciated you spotlighting both. Track45 has a genuine country sound and the sister on lead reminds me a lot of Dolly. My Girl is a great oldie! Here’s hoping the sunshine finds you this week, my dear. Have a boogietastic day! xo
Love your picks. Love the Willow Sage and Pink cover. Very nice.
I’ve always liked “My Girl”…but now that it’s Lindor’s walkup music … the Temptations showed up at Citi Field last year to sing for him … https://youtu.be/LVMiHcbRe3g?si=CY4PTMfrQ_k1uIJ5
Whatever might have happened between them, Dolly never forgot what Porter had done for her. That’s class. Good picks this week!
What a great list! I love Pink, she seems authentic and empowering. Justin Timberlake looks like such a little boy. I love My Girl ad well.
The Light of a Clear Blue Morning cover was beautiful. I was so certain that Dolly was singing in it! My Girl is a classic. I also like the other two songs. All in all, a wonderful tribute to the month of May.
