Hello, Monday – I’m still moving slowly as my ribs continue to heal, and the colder, wet weather has descended upon us here in the Pacific Northwest, so it’s time for some music to chase the blues away! And whaddaya know – since it is Monday, that, of course, means music! This week’s theme is “Pick a song or build a playlist of your songs opposite to what you usually listen to.” This is a tough one because I listen to a wide variety of music, but I did find some that fit this theme. 😉 Let’s get this opposite party started!

First, I’ve never been a fan, and certainly not a “Belieber,” so this first song will fit right in with the theme this week. Here, the artist talks about his love for his wife and why he believes she’s the one. The Canadian starts with the chorus, where he details why he fell for her before giving more reasons for tying the knot with her. They include:

She’s honest / Modest / Keeps it real with him / She’s the sun in his morning / She’s his safe haven / Her hazel eyes

The second verse is by an artist this artist collaborated with. While the first verse lyrics are from the perspective of a happily married man, the Houston artist’s rhymes recount his rapper lifestyle. He talks about scoring weed, riding his jeep, and ensuring he’s fully prepared should he encounter any apps in the club.

Give a listen to Justin Bieber featuring Don Toliver with “Honest”:

Next up is an artist I rarely listen to—I’m sure there will be some MMMM peeps who will be aghast at that notion, but at least you won’t be annoyed with this song choice. 😉 He does have a beautiful voice, and I believe I share some of his Christmas songs during our Christmas shenanigans during the month of December. This is an older song of his, but he released a new music video for it a couple of weeks ago that I know you’ll enjoy.

Here’s Michael Bublé with “Hold On”:

Next is an artist I listened to as a kid simply because I had no choice. My parents loved him, and my dad had a reel-to-reel set up in the dining room with a plethora of tapes from this artist that he would play constantly—and sing offkey to—All. The. Time. Needless to say, when you have too much of a good thing, you tend to dislike it after a while. Don’t get me wrong, I like the artist – just not my usual jam. 😉

Give a listen to Elvis Presley with “Blue Suede Shoes”:

Last but certainly not least, one thing I’ve always said about songs I like to listen to is that I like all genres except rap. You know where this is going, don’t you? This song is a stark and honest reflection on this artist’s past struggles with addiction. The song takes the form of a message to his daughters Hailie (his biological child) Alaina (adopted), and son Stevie (adopted). He apologizes for prioritizing drugs over his family and expresses deep regret for missing out on precious moments.

The song opens with a recording of a young Alaina pleading for the artist to join dinner, highlighting the missed connections caused by his addiction. This leads to the chorus, a sample of the collaborating artist’s 2023 hit with the lyrics:

Somebody save me, me from myself / I’ve spent so long living in Hell

Both artist’s have battled addiction and achieved sobriety. The main artist has been clean and sober since 2008. The artist this artist collaborated with said:

“You can imagine how I felt when I got the call that Eminem would be sampling my song ‘Save Me’ on his new album. And for him to use the song to discuss the other side of what could’ve happened if he would’ve allowed his demons to win brought me to tears.”

Just a heads up, there’s some NSFW language in this song.

Give a listen to Eminem featuring Jelly Roll with “Somebody Save Me”:

That’s a wrap for this week – have a great Monday! See you on the dance floor!

  1. I only sample Bieber’s music when others share it. Rap surely falls into an opposite genre for me but I sort of enjoyed Eminem’s song. Addiction is a horrible thing for anyone to constantly have to battle. I can’t even imagine and I’m glad that I can’t. I pray for anyone dealing with these sorts of demons. Way to go with your song picks, my friend. Have a boogietastic week!
