*Poof*! Half of July is already gone! Can someone please find that ‘pause’ button?! Since it is Monday, that, of course, means music! This week’s theme is “Songs that make you think of sports or other outdoor activities.” Alrighty then – let’s get this outdoor party started!

Let’s start with a feel-good song for (outside) travel lovers, an ode to going the distance. Cue it up when you’re packing your bags or planning your next adventure.

This song, in particular, became the duo’s barn-storming signature tune. The song became so well known that actress Mary Stuart Masterson requested that the song be used as the theme song in the opening titles of the 1993 movie Benny and Joon. That propelled the song to number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, giving the twins a hit – and a career for life.

Get ready to dance (or walk), here’s The Proclaimers with “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)”:

Next up, as the title suggests, this song is about taking chances and living life to the fullest. It’s a great anthem for anyone who’s feeling restless, itching for a new journey, or just looking for great songs about traveling.

Feeling a little stagnant? Sometimes in life, we find ourselves stationary for too long and perhaps needing to move—2020, anyone? Maybe the movement is geographical around the world. Maybe it’s choreographically in your own living room. It looks different for all of us. Regardless – remain stationary no longer because this tune and the music video will quickly get you dancing and rolling into your next adventure of a lifetime.

Give a listen to Coldplay with “Adventure Of A Lifetime”:

Next up for another fun outside adventure is a track from this next group’s second major-label studio album. It also has a guest artist along for the ride; the collaboration happened as a result of a chance meeting in 2009 when they met on a camping trip and hung around a campfire. Pretty cool, no? Well, you’ll see.

They may or may not have been vacationing in Margaritaville if you know what I mean.

The song is about laying back and having no worries—some of the lyrics say, “Only worry in the world is the tide gonna reach my chair.” The song stemmed from one of the band members’ breakup when he felt he needed to just get away and find water somewhere, which initiated the first verse and melody. The music video is whacky, filmed on a private beach, and includes actress Juliette Lewis as one of the characters.

I love this song with its island vibe – I’m sure you will too. Here’s Zac Brown Band, and Jimmy Buffett with “Knee Deep”:

Last but not least, of songs about outdoor activities, this is one of my favorites. This is pretty much my water/summer dream song. And I’ve been really jonesin’ to get a pontoon boat since being back in the Pacific Northwest with plenty of bodies of water to play in. And motorboat in.

Fun Fact: At the 2013 ACM Awards, Little Big Town was asked if they were concerned about the title. They weren’t until they went to London and realized the people there really had no idea what a pontoon is. The members of the band grew up on pontoons and on the lake, so they didn’t think about the fact that pontoons aren’t everywhere.

Without further ado, here’s Little Big Town with “Pontoon”:

That’s a wrap for this week – have a great Monday! See you on the dance floor!

  1. These ate fun songs. Love the last one. I was going to pick 500 Miles but now, will go a different route. Enjoyed the songs.

  2. “Pontoon” has such a fun vibe and it certainly makes me think of being outdoors during the summer. I’m not a sun loving creature but I do love songs that make feel like I relaxing in the shade or drifting along in the water. Have a boogietastic week, darlin’!

  3. My favorite this week surprised me a little – Coldplay. I reallyliked the vibe of that song. I never would have thought of 500 miles for this week’s theme.
