It’s Monday, and for some of us, it’s an extra ‘no alarm’ day – those are always welcome days for sure! Since it is Monday, you know that Monday means music! This week is a freebie week, so grab your favorite tune(s) and come dance with us, won’t you?
Let’s start with an artist who just won the New Male Artist Trophy at the Academy of Country Music Awards, who teamed with this Canadian singer-songwriter who’s been around since 1999 to perform his new song with him. The song originally came out as a solo single in February, with him drinking away his sorrows alone. He said:
“I’ve tried to outrun the pain of a heartbreak in so many different ways. And I feel like the only thing that can really get you through it is time… That’s kinda what the song is about. Trying everything you can to outrun the pain of a heartbreak, but you can’t do it.”
He had the idea to re-record his single with the pop/rock/alternative star, and the two decided it would be a great idea to release the song on the same day they performed it together at the ACMs.
Here’s to Nate Smith featuring Avril Lavigne with “Bulletproof”:
Next up is a brand-new song from this artist, who has long been open about all aspects of his life in his music — from his complex relationship with his hometown to his journey towards finding faith — and an important part of the singer’s story is his relationship with alcohol and, ultimately, sobriety.
The singer has been sober since 2016, and he recently celebrated another year of sobriety. Back in October, he just so happened to be playing a sold-out show in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and he marked the moment by debuting an unreleased song that reflects on his experience with addiction and what he’s learned from his time as an active alcoholic. He told the crowd that he realized early on that his addictive personality shows up in many different aspects of his life:
“Working out — just, you know, anything. Pretty much anything I touch, I can turn into an addiction.”
That personality trait is what inspired him to write this song.
“I wrote this song, and I wanna share it with y’all. It’s called ‘Same Drunk,’ it’s not out yet, but I love testing new stuff out.”
The song’s opening lines look at different family members—a mom, dad, sister, and brother—who’ve all got their “drug of choice,” whether it’s beauty products intended to keep mom from aging or—in the dad’s case—yard work: Maybe we’re all just the same drunk / Different beer
Give a listen to Walker Hayes with “Same Drunk”:
Next up is a brand new vulnerable song from this artist that explores the depths of mental health issues – he sings about having the devil on his back, voices in his head, and wonders if he’d be better off laying in the dirt. The country star took center stage on the season finale of The Voice to debut this song.
I am not OK, I’m barely getting by / I’m losing track of days, I’m losing sleep at night / I know I can’t be the only one who’s holding on for dear life / But I know God knows, when it’s all said and done / I am not OK, but it’s all gonna be alright
Give a listen to Jelly Roll with “I Am Not OK”:
Last but certainly not least is a new song from this Grammy-winning, multi-Platinum band, the third single in the lead-up to their highly anticipated upcoming new album out on June 28th. The funk-pop track is an upbeat retelling of the foibles and beauty that come in the beginning stages of a relationship.
The video is set amid the nostalgic ambiance of a retro bar and captures the magnetic first encounter (or is it?) of the lead singer and a new love interest. I found this video clip of the lead singer explaining the song:
