Hello Monday peeps! This is my least favorite time of year – when those that are they take away that precious hour. It makes Monday that much more mundane. Just sayin’.

But since it is Monday, that of course means music! For this week, our Spotlight Dancer is our regular participant and friend, John of The Sound of One Hand Typing! His theme suggestion: “Write a (clean) love story and use the names of two or three (or, in my case, five or more) songs from the Top 40 on Valentine’s Day of some year.” Let’s get this love story party started!

Maia sat alone in her room, staring at the walls covered with posters of her favorite bands and artists. She had always been a music lover, finding solace and comfort in the lyrics and melodies of her favorite songs. But lately, she had been feeling lost and alone, despite the upbeat tunes blasting through her speakers.

She picked up her guitar and strummed a few chords, trying to find some inspiration. As she played, the words of a song she had written a while ago came back to her. ‘Selfish‘, she sang softly, ‘I know it’s wrong, but I can’t help it. I just want you all to myself.’

The song was about a guy she had been crushing on for a long time. He was everything she wanted – charming, funny, and incredibly talented. But he was also popular and always surrounded by people, making it impossible for Maia to get close to him.

She sighed and put down her guitar, feeling frustrated and envious of those who were able to be with the person they loved. ‘Why can’t I have Beautiful Things?’ she thought to herself, remembering the title of another song she had written.

She grabbed her phone and scrolled through her music playlist, trying to find something to match her mood. Eventually, she settled on a song called ‘Can’t Get Enough.’ It was a catchy tune with a bittersweet message about wanting more than what you can have.

Maia closed her eyes and let the lyrics wash over her, feeling a sense of longing and desperation. She couldn’t get enough of this guy, but she knew she could never have him.

As the song ended, Maia’s phone buzzed with a text from her best friend, Lily. ‘Hey, wanna hang out tonight?’ it read.

Maia hesitated for a moment, not wanting to leave the comfort of her room. But then she remembered the promise she had made to Lily to be more social and try new things. So she replied with a simple ‘Sure’ and got ready to leave.

They decided to go to a local bar where a band was playing. Maia had never been a fan of bars, but she was willing to give it a try for Lily’s sake.

As they walked in, the familiar tune of ‘Lose Control‘ hit Maia’s ears. She couldn’t help but smile as she recognized the song. It was one of her favorites, and she couldn’t believe they were playing it live.

As they made their way through the crowd, Maia couldn’t help but notice a familiar face on stage. It was the guy she had been crushing on, singing his heart out and captivating the entire audience.

Maia’s heart skipped a beat as their eyes met, and she couldn’t believe her luck. She had never expected to see him perform live, let alone in a small bar like this.

As the night went on, Maia couldn’t take her eyes off of him. She watched as he poured his heart out through his music, and she felt like she could relate to every word he sang.

But as the last song of the night, ‘Champagne Problems,’ started playing, Maia’s heart sank. The song was about a broken relationship, and she couldn’t help but think of her own unrequited feelings.

She excused herself to the bathroom, feeling tears prickling at the corners of her eyes. She splashed some cold water on her face, trying to compose herself before heading back to Lily.

But when she returned to their table, she found Lily talking to the guy from the stage. Maia’s heart raced as she approached them, not sure what to do or say.

‘Maia, this is Jake,’ Lily introduced them, a mischievous glint in her eyes.

‘Hi,’ Maia managed to say, trying to act cool.

‘Hey, I saw you singing along to my songs. Do you write music too?’ Jake asked, smiling at her.

Maia’s heart skipped a beat as she realized he had noticed her in the crowd. She nodded, feeling a sense of excitement and nervousness all at once.

‘Maybe we can write something together sometime,’ Jake said, handing her a piece of paper with his number on it.

Maia couldn’t believe it. She had never imagined that her crush would not only notice her but also want to collaborate with her.

As she and Lily left the bar, Maia couldn’t stop smiling. She had gone from feeling like she was falling apart to feeling like she was on top of the world.

And as she walked home, she couldn’t help but hum the tune of ‘Champagne Problems,’ now with a new meaning. Maybe her broken heart had found a way to heal through the power of music.

  1. I enjoyed how your story revolved around music all the way of a song writer pining for a boy who she thought didn’t even see her and with the magic of music brought two like-minded hearts together. I only knew your song picks by JLo and Teddy. Thanks for the introduction of the others. Have a boogietastic week, Stacy!

PS: Marie asked me pass on that she has been down with her back and having computer woes to boot. That’s why she wasn’t around last week but hopes to have a post up this week!

  2. This was a fun theme and you did a great job with your short story. My favorite this week was a tie between Teddy Swims and Benson Boone, although I must say I just loved that venue where Jennifer Lopez had her video reception for her song. I could never dance like her, though. Alana ramblinwitham
