Happy New Year everyone! Or almost – if you’re reading this Sunday night,  but I hope you’re out enjoying some New Year revelry. For the first time in about 16 years, the hubby is actually playing a New Year gig! It’ll be nice to ring in the new year together, typically he’s crashed out well before the midnight hour, and I’m usually on the phone with friends or family when the clock strikes 12, so this will be a nice change of pace.

While it’s New Year’s Day, it’s also Monday – and you know that Monday means music! This week is “Songs relating to the new year goodbye/hello and old/new.” Grab your New Year tune(s) and come dance with us, won’t you?

Let’s start with this favorite artist who released this holiday song when last year when she re-released her 2017 Christmas album with this shiny new song plus another as bonus tracks. Since there aren’t a whole lot of New Year’s songs out there, this one is certainly welcome – and enjoyable.

Here’s Sia with “3 Minutes ‘Til New Years”:

Next up is a perennial favorite song, the Frank Loesser’s classic written in 1947, when Loesser was already an accomplished songwriter who went on to win two Tony Awards, a Pulitzer Prize, and an Academy Award for the holiday standard, “Baby It’s Cold Outside” from the film “Neptune’s Daughter” (1949). Sadly, Loesser died from cancer at the age of 59 in 1969 – can you imagine how many more cool hits he would have had over the years?

This fun a cappella group does this song justice in my opinion.

Here’s Straight No Chaser with “What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve?”

Next up is one of my favorite songs from this group, a sparse, reflective track in which the lead singer looks back on the good times with a loved one while enjoying some drinks with friends. The effects of the alcohol and camaraderie with his pals cause his emotions to bubble up as he remembers their times together. He was quoted as saying:

“This song is for anyone who has ever experienced loss. In other words, this song is for all of us.

No matter what happens in the world around you, think about those people you love and share some good memories. We wrote this song to bring people together. It’s an important message for right now.”

Give a listen to Maroon 5 with “Memories”:

Last, but certainly not least, is a song that has become my all time favorite New Year’s tunes since it’s debut in November 2017 to share on New Year’s Day. The story behind the song as told by the artist:

“We threw a big New Year’s Eve party in London this year, and I was thinking about how everybody talks and thinks about who you kiss at midnight. Like it’s this big romantic idea of like, ‘Who are you gonna kiss at midnight, like ring in the New Year.’ And I think that is very romantic.

But I think there’s something even more romantic about who’s gonna deal with you on New Year’s Day. Who’s willing to give you Advil and clean up the house. I think that states more of a permanence. So I was thinking about that, and I wrote this song called ‘New Year’s Day.’”

The artist debuted the song a day before the album’s release, during a special performance shot at her Rhode Island home in a candle-lit living room, and surrounded by fans.

Get ready for more goosebumps, here’s the inimitable Taylor Swift with “New Year’s Day”:

That’s a wrap for this week – have a great Monday! See you on the dance floor!
