Tuesday has arrived once again – since these weeks seem to be flying by, I’m leaving this counter up so we can keep an eye on how much time we have left before Christmas…mwahahahaha!
One more week and I’ll be able to reveal the shenanigans we were up to over Memorial Day weekend – the oldest arrives home on Friday, so the cat will be out of the bag, and I’ll finally be able to let you all in on the fun. Meanwhile, this upcoming weekend is our annual Egg Days celebration – yes, people, we have a weekend that is dedicated to the mighty egg:
On August 13, 1921 a road between Winlock and Cowlitz Corner was completed. There was a big celebration commemorating the event, and since Winlock was becoming quite a famous poultry center, they decided to call the celebration “Winlock Poultry and Egg Day.” There were about 1,000 people present at the celebration. Otis Roundtree was the General Chairman for the event. After the celebration, it was decided to make this an annual event, which was done. (excerpt from “A History of Winlock, Washington”, written by C. C. Wall, 1952)
This was the parade float from 1930:
Pretty wild, no? For the past 100+ years, Egg Day has been celebrated, except for four years during World War II, and in 2020 during Covid. In 2021 we had the Centennial celebration, which was so much fun.
Our first year to experience Egg Days was 2017, the year we moved to this tiny town – that year they had a huge fireworks display at dusk, which we loved (and thought was so cool). Unfortunately, that was the last year they did that, since the former mayor put the kibosh on it (basically he said the local fireworks manufacturer didn’t file for a permit in time, and refused to make an exception).
That mayor resigned a couple years into his term when he turned out not to be thinking in the best interest of the residents of this town. Sadly he was replaced by an equally terrible mayor in his stead (major bait-and-switch during his campaigning). Between those two, no fireworks fun for Egg Days, sadly.
Every year there is a theme, and this year’s theme is “The Year Of The Egg”. One of the fabulous volunteers of the annual event designed this year’s commemorative button:
I like to get a bunch of the buttons and give them out to friends and family. The thing I love about the annual buttons is that they invite everyone to submit artwork for consideration – kids and adults alike. Then they get voted on for the one selected for that year. I keep trying to get my artistic nerd child to submit artwork, but so far I haven’t been successful in my pleading. I’ll keep trying…heh!
Enough about that – let’s dive into the funnies, shall we? This cracked me up:
