Here we are, a mere 12 days from Christmas. I swear the time flies by faster every year – I just started trying to locate all the gifts I’ve already bought so I can get them wrapped – I need a better plan for next year so I’m not rushed leading up until Christmas Eve as I suspect that will be the case this year. Let the crazy games begin!

I’d love to get back to the ‘old days’ when I was super organized and had all presents wrapped by Thanksgiving, save the few last-minute gifts that trickle in late because sometimes shipping can be slow as molasses, depending on what it is and where it’s coming from. Somehow after hubby and kids my organizational skills have been severely put to the test. Only for personal stuff, though – my work organization is on point. Most days.

So Friday was my birthday, and since it’s such a hectic and busy time of year, we almost didn’t get the siblings together for this weekend, but we pulled it off! My brother and sister’s birthday is today (twins), so it was perfect that my other sister flew in from Kansas to celebrate with us, so all four of us siblings were together for an evening. Sweet!

Since we needed to accommodate my brother’s busy schedule, we decided to get together on Friday evening. Unfortunately, the almost two-hour drive from our house to my mom’s house ended up being much longer, since Mother Nature decided to send a deluge of rain our way. Add to that the Friday traffic in the Pacific Northwest is typically horrendous to begin with – adding a downpour to the mix slowed things down even further, which added almost an entire hour to the drive because of stop-and-go traffic on the freeway.

Thankfully we all made it to my mom’s house safely and enjoyed a great evening with pizza and cake. We changed dinner plans from Friday to Saturday, but the hubby ended up coming down with the flu bug that’s going around, so we postponed my birthday dinner until this next weekend. At least he felt better enough to still take me to see The Nutcracker on Sunday.

It was quite enjoyable and a wee bit crazy as the second act began by plunging the stage into darkness when they lost power to the stage lights somehow. Luckily the dancers on stage were holding battery operated candles for that dance, so they finished the beginning of that set before someone brought the curtains down and made an announcement apologizing for the interruption.

20 minutes later they were back in business, and the same dancers took that dance segment from the top. The hubby got seats for us on the main floor just 4 rows back from the stage – while I loved the close proximity, I told him next time let’s get some in the balcony so we can see the entire stage, as my view was blocked by a big-haired woman sitting in front of me. The only other gripe we had was there was no live orchestra – so the music wasn’t as enjoyable as it normally is, but all in all, it was an excellent wrap up to a lowkey birthday weekend.

Let’s jump into the funnies, shall we? This totally cracked me up:

  1. I’m semi-organized this year: I have a list of what I’ve purchased and I do plan to wrap soon then mark what I have wrapped. The disorganized part is that my husband won’t update the list with stuff he’s gotten for the kids so it’s like, what do we even have??

  2. I wish you and your siblings many, many happy returns of the day! I also hope your husband is feeling better.

Thanks for the laughs, especially that last one.

  3. The one where the guy rescues the kitty brother reminds me of Mary and I. That would be the kind of thing we do.

I like the one about the fight starting at the Piggly Wiggly, except around here it’d be the Kroger or Publix. But it’s true, snow in the south isn’t magical, it’s a pain in the backside.

Hope your birthday was good this weekend!
