Monday has arrived and Monday means music! For the month of September, our Spotlight Dancer is our very own friend and co-conductor, Cathy from Curios as a CAThy! The theme selected for this week is “National Boss/Employee Exchange Day – Songs about filling another person’s work shoes or in general for those who don’t work outside the home”. This one was a little tricky – so I went with a general work theme. Let’s get this work party started!

Let’s start with this 1982 rock song about living paycheck to paycheck. He’s working for a living and feels like he will be until the day he dies. Some days just feel like that, don’t they?

Here’s Huey Lewis And The News with “Workin’ For A Livin'”:

Next up, forget the manicures and spray-on tans because the woman in this 2010 country song is working too hard to have time for it. During the week, she is a bartender and waitress who pulls double shifts to make ends meet.

But come Friday nights the redneck, blue collar girl with calloused hands is ready to get honkytonk loud. She boasts, “I’m the first to clock in but the last to pass out.”

Here’s Gretchen Wilson with “Work Hard, Play Harder”:

Next up, working 12-hour shifts five days a week has to be monotonous and mind numbing because the guy in this 2010 country song can’t do his math correctly. (He says he works 52 hours, but 12×5=60.) On Saturday nights, however, he’s happy to cut loose and let the drinks flow freely.

Unfortunately, the drinks don’t help his math skills. However, they do numb his mind.

Give a listen to Kid Rock with “God Bless Saturday”:

Last, but certainly not least, is a song that was written by Prince (who wrote this song under the name of “Christopher”) which ultimately became this group’s first hit. The purple one discovered this group after coming across the video for one of their early singles on MTV. He showed up at one of their gigs in Los Angeles, then joined them onstage.

The group recorded this song with the appropriate trepidation that comes with a song written by a superstar. They had decided to remake it from the ground up, and were nervous about if Prince would like it or not. He went to their rehearsal after the record was done, and he was really thrilled with how it came out.

Get ready to dance, here’s The Bangles with “Manic Monday”:

That’s a wrap for this week – see you on the dance floor!

  1. Great job there girlfriend! Yep, I’m back and here’s my link https://newxmasdolly.blogspot.com/2021/09/xmasdollys-mondays-music-moves-me.html – ya got some great tunes here! A couple I never heard either. Well, after a new computer the kids got me for Christmas, driving myself nuts to make a new blog cuz I cannot afford to pay for one anymore, and the girls I was with they couldn’t keep me on with them anymore either so I went back to my old roots blogspot.com . It’s a been a long time and other obstacles, but I finally made it back. Hope you and yours are doing fine also. Be safe, and be well to you and yours. Have a great day! 2. Hey Stacy,

Great song picks! I made my theme a bit tricky but everyone is really shining through regardless as I knew each person would because let’s face it 4Mers rock! I really enjoyed Gretchen Wilson’s “Work Hard, Play Harder”. She does country well. You and I matched on two of your song choices. Well, here it is another Manic Monday, so let’s get things done. 😉 Have a boogietastic week, my dear! I hope you’re feeling better. 😘

  3. Great music set. Gretchen Wilson was a much underappreciated artist. I always forget about Kid Rock, but I always love it when someone else remembers to include his rasp in the mix and the Bangles is another classic that completely slipped my mind. Well done.

  4. “Work Hard, Play Harder” was a fun song – I wish I had that kind of energy nowadays. I know Kid Rock from his rock songs – his voice in this one reminded me some of the early Rod Stewart. But my favorite of the set was Manic Monday. I had only read recently that Prince wrote that song. Yes, I had to check You Tube to see if they had the Prince recording of it and indeed, they do (recently released). The song was really suited for The Bangles, though. Nice set.
