It’s happening. Summer break is (mostly) coming to an end. School starts this week for the kids, so we’ll be back on a regular schedule vs. the days merging together and always thinking it’s a different day than it actually is. Do you find you do that during the summer months? I’m going to assume there was a collective nod of heads.
Seeing as how it’s Monday (in spite of the days blurring together), it’s time for some music! This week our Spotlight Dancer, Patrick from Adventures in Weseland, chose a theme of “Back to School” – songs about teachers, school, and students.
I know there will probably be many familiar songs being played today, so I thought I’d go off the beaten path and find some back to school parody songs for fun. I was amazed at how many there are! So I’ve collected some of my favorites for your listening pleasure.
Let’s start with what has to be the coolest 4th grade teacher in Chicago. A Christian hip-hop artist recently got a lot of attention for a welcome song he posted on YouTube that went viral. The emcee has been featured all over news outlets and the Internet, including Good Morning America, CBS News, NBC Chicago, and Mashable. He even went international, with coverage in the U.K.’s Daily Mail and India’s India Today.
He also got contacted by The Ellen DeGeneres Show people on Twitter, so possibly he’ll be seen on there as well.
A first year teacher, he is a native of Chicago. He says he plans on using music throughout the school year to help students remember his lessons, so fans can expect some new tracks from the upstart rapper in the near future.
Here’s Dwayne Reed with “Welcome to the 4th Grade”:
Next up is Teon and other Citizens Academy students singing new lyrics to “Grenade” melody, calling it the “Bruno Mars Education Song”:
Next up is one for all my teacher friends, a cool teacher doing a parody from Iggy Azalea’s Song “I’m So Fancy”.
Here’s Katie Moon with “I’m Your Teacher”:
Next up is the hilarious family who do such an awesome job with parody songs. Their videos are always a treat!
Without further ado, here’s The Holderness Family with “Lose My Mind, a Back To School DMX Parody”:
Last, but not least, today happens to be Labor Day, which is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.
So in honor of all that labor, here’s Huey Lewis and Garth Brooks with “Workin’ For A Livin'”:
That’s a wrap for this week – have a great Monday!
Now on to the particulars of Monday’s Music Move’s Me: I have the supreme honor and privilege of being a co-host with the inimitable Xmas Dolly and our musical cohorts, Callie from JAmericanSpice, and Naila Moon from Just the Stuff Ya Know.
Want to join in the fun? It’s easy – just find a tune that rocks your boat, post it and link up – don’t forget to grab Xmas Dolly…er, um, I mean her button…over at her place here. Check out Xmas Dolly’s sidebar for the random themes we sport each week – and you can always ask for a specific theme of music you like, too. Check out the other music lovahs and let’s jam!

Wait! Before you go…
We’re celebrating 6 years of Monday’s Music Moves Me! I know, right?! Sure doesn’t feel that long sharing music and dancing to your favorites! We’re honoring this with a small giveaway you can enter for fun – just do it!
Not much of a hip-hop fan, unfortunately, but I loved hearing Huey Lewis and Garth Brooks!
Hmmmm… I never paid attention to what ‘genre’ these were, just that they were fun/funny parodies that cracked me up. 😉 My favorite coincides with yours, though, the duet with Huey Lewis and Garth Brooks! 🙂 Thanks for stopping by, John – have a great week! 🙂
Stacy, these are fabulous! I love your take on the theme. In fact, you gave me inspiration on how I’m taking Friday Sillies this week. Thanks for sharing all the cool, fun teacher/education songs! Have a funtastic week. It’s time to slow things down and get back to routine again.
Thank you, Cathy! I’m glad you enjoyed them! 🙂 And I’m looking forward to what direction you’ve been inspired to go for Friday sillies… 😉 Have an awesome week! 🙂
Great songs. I enjoyed them all and got a laugh. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed them, Patrick! Thanks for the fun theme! 😀 Enjoy your week!
Oh wow, me too! I agree with everyone here! I enjoyed each one listening to them all to the end. I was laughing my butt off. That Fourth Grade teacher what a great idea that was huh? Fantastic. Thanks for sharing baby girl. Hope you guys had a great holiday! Holiday? Yeah right, while we cook all day!!! hmph!!!!
If all teachers were as cool as that 4th grade teacher, kids would be more excited about going to school! Teachers really do make a difference. Glad you enjoyed the tunes – laughter is the best medicine for anything! 🙂 Thanks for coming by and dancing with me – have a great week my friend! 🙂
Mr Reed is totally cool and I love that his beat is so original! Hey why can’t we get the cool teachers?
And yes our days always run into each other too. But I love hanging out with me babies 🙂
Of course, GMTA with that education song 🙂
I didn’t even know there were so many of them either!
I”m guessing that Holderness family is the one that did the all about that base (?) Thanksgiving song that is stuck in my head forever 🙂 Love them!!!
Thanks for rocking girl.
Happy short week 🙂
Mr. Reed sure does seem cool! I wish ALL teachers were cool like that! 😀 Yes, the Holderness Family is the same one whose Thanksgiving song, “All About that Baste” went viral…they really are hilarious! 🙂 Thanks for coming by to dance – hope you all are OK after your car accident, with no ‘after-effects’ showing up. Happy short week to you, too! 🙂
One of the better images I’ve seen lately
Can’t believe the summer’s over already. It just started!! Really enjoyed Mr. Reed’s rap video, it’s very cool and extremely well done.
I wished I had had a teacher as cool as Mr. Reed. This was one fun post, Stacy, and like you said, great minds!
