It’s time once again for some Friday fill-in fun, the perfect way to wrap up the week and kick off the weekend!

From Ann of McGuffy’s Reader:

“The Friendly Fill-Ins are four fun and easy statements to complete. Ellen of 15andmeowing provides the first two statements and the final two are offered by myself. We try to make sure they will be fun to both answer and share. On Friday, the linky will be posted at or about 12:00 AM. Please come back, link up, and share your thoughts!”

And away we go! Here are this week’s statements with my fill-ins:

Week 14: August 12, 2016

1. My nickname is… My parents, siblings, relatives, and anyone who knows me from birth to sixth grade call me Shelly. I know you’re wondering how in the world they got ‘Shelly’ from ‘Stacy’. It actually stems from my middle name being Micháel – not pronounced as it’s spelled, but as ‘Michele’ – my dad apparently misspelled it on the birth certificate and threw the diacritical mark above the ‘a’. Unfortunately that never comes through when I get stuff addressed to “Mr. Stacy Michael Swenson”. I actually wrote a post about the whole name thing here if you want to delve a little deeper.

I also have a secondary nickname bestowed upon me by my best friend in high school – “Misty-A”. As in Miss T.A. Get it? I had extra study halls in 12th grade, so rather than goof off, I volunteered my services to my favorite Honors English teacher as well as my favorite combo Math and Bible teacher. I know, I know, I apparently didn’t comprehend the ‘free’ part of ‘free time’.

2. The first thing I ever won was… a little stuffed bulldog with a red and white striped shirt at the fair. I don’t know if I actually won it, or if my favorite uncle won it for me – I was, after all, very very young at the time. It kind of looked like this, only it was all white, didn’t have a collar, and wore a red and white striped shirt:

I loved that thing to pieces and slept with it every night, until one fateful day I had the flu – and tossed my cookies all over my beloved stuffed dog. When I recovered, I asked my mom where he was, but she’d thrown him out since she had no clue how to clean him up. I still miss that cheap little doggy.

3. I have never been to… Europe! I know, right?! It’s on my bucket list, though – hopefully the world won’t go to hell in a hand basket before then. I really really want to go at least once to literally and figuratively broaden my horizons.

Europe

Oh! And I’ve pretty much been to every state in the U.S., except Alaska. So that’s another place I want to go, too.

Alaska

4. Next year… will hopefully bring great new things. I’m working on some stuff to make that happen. Stay tuned!!

That’s a wrap! Hope you join in the fun! As a side note, we were off camping last weekend with absolutely positively no internet connection (believe me, I tried – even had my Karma with me to try to connect) so I’m way behind making the rounds for last week – I’ll be rectifying that later.

  1. The name thing can get to be a headache. It is a good thing my child-bride Suzanne made sure I was not around when the birth certificate lady came around at the hospital or our kids would have some very weird names.

  2. How very sad that your mama threw out your dog! I would have been totally devastated had that happened to my Teddy bear. Your dog probably could have been spot cleaned with a damp wash cloth. It might have taken several times of doing it to make him presentable, but, well, that is just so sad.

As far as the world going to heck in a hand basket…I think it is already there. Still, I would love to go to Ireland. I hope you get to make your European journey some day.

    Have a blessed weekend!

  3. Well Shelly, hi there and it was fun reading this post.
Now I’m sorry you lost your toy Misty-A , I can imagine the yearning after it.

One day I’d love to travel to Europe also. And we’ve been to Alaska…one or two times I believe. I almost wanted to live there.

    Aloha 🙂

  4. Thank you for participating in the fill-ins, great answers. I hope you get to go to Alaska and Europe, I have not been to many places and have never left the country. Have a nice weekend.

  5. Great answers and I have been in your shoes about the stuffed animal. So sad! Only instead of the flu it was contaminated with pink eye. Everything was for lack of a better word, torched. We lived on a farm and my grandma tossed it all into the fire bin. Sheets and all because in the 70’s, they didn’t think bleach killed much.. strange right?

I love your name and I have been to Alaska! Its stunning and I can’t wait to go back!

  6. Great answers. 🙂 I hope you get to go to Europe one day. I also have not been to Alaska yet and would love to go. Alaska and the Grand Canyon are about the only two places I haven’t been too in the us. i hear Alaska is beautiful. Hope you get to go there one of these days.
Sorry to hear about your dog I would of been upset. My son has a stuffed monkey that he loves and I through it in the wash after he got sick and spit up on it turned out okay and he still plays with it to this day. He had it since he was a newborn. Now 2.
Love your name 🙂 Hope you have a great week ahead.
