I’ve always loved taking pictures. In fact, many of my friends thought me a tad annoying when I was always snapping pictures everywhere we go. When I was in high school, I saved my babysitting money to buy a fancy 35mm camera that I’d been drooling over at a local store.
That was back when all the cameras were film cameras (remember those days?) and this one had all the cool bells and whistles. I loved that camera. I took it everywhere I went and got some incredibly amazing shots. Then it was stolen one Saturday afternoon right out of my trunk when I was parked in Downtown Seattle.
I was heartbroken.
It took awhile to save up and replace that camera, but it was truly never the same, I didn’t love that camera as much. But it was functional. Years later I sold the replacement camera and bought a new SLR – still a film camera (and I still have that one, I’m resisting the urge to go all digital all the time) and loved that one almost as much as my very first one, especially since it had way cooler features on it.
It was a Canon, of course.
Now that Christmas is looming in the offing, figuring out perfect gifts for all family members can be quite disconcerting. But if you have a burgeoning photographer on your list, a camera makes a great gift that the family will enjoy for years to come.
You know the saying “A picture is worth a thousand words” – it’s so true. I love looking back on pictures I’ve taken years ago, smiling at the cool memories they conjure up. I of course cherish all the pictures of my kids from when they were little – wishing I could step into the photograph and cherish them just a little bit more since they grow so fast.
