Thanksgiving is next week, people. One week from today is the notorious Black Friday. I’m sure many of you are already planning on where you will be going that day. Not me – I did that a couple of times and being buffeted around by a clamoring crowd were enough to cause me to retreat and do my shopping from the safety of my own home. You know, via cyberspace.
But did you know that the day after that is dedicated to Small Business? It’s called Small Business Saturday.
Small Business Saturday is November 24th, between Black Friday and one of my other favorite days to shop, Cyber Monday. It was created by American Express in 2010 in order to get people excited about supporting the small, independently-owned businesses operating in their communities.
This is a day set aside to not only highlight wonderful small businesses, but give people the opportunity to start their holiday shopping and get some amazing, and usually one-of-a-kind gifts, all while supporting small businesses. Without your support, these business will not stay in business.
I’m already mapping out which cool little shops I plan to haunt on that day – Princess Nagger and I are going to make a day of it and even do lunch at a small restaurant we’ve heard great things about – all in the name of supporting the all-important Small Business.
I figure it will be the perfect time for her to pick out some gifts she’ll want to give to the hubby – you can find the coolest most unique items when you shop small, and since both Princess Nagger and the hubby are very unique individuals, I know she’ll pick out the perfect Christmas present that will bring a big smile to his face.
Please help support the small businesses in your community – mark your calendar for Saturday, November 24th, and head out to shop local shops – you’ll be surprised at what cool things you might find and have some of your shopping done before the holiday season gets even more hectic.
You can find a list of places to shop small that are local to you. You can also show your support and share your small business stories on Twitter using the hashtag #SmallBizSat.
Which brings me to this week’s question(s):
Have you started your holiday shopping yet? Are you planning to ‘shop small’?
Have a great weekend.

Happy Aloha Friday!
In Hawaii, Aloha Friday is the day that we take it easy and look forward to the weekend. So on Fridays let’s take it easy on posting, too. Ask a simple question…nothing that requires a lengthy response. It’s a great way to make new blogging friends!

I mix it up, pretty much. I’m a small business owner myself, so I do appreciate that of course, but I will snag a few things the kids reaaaaaallllly want from the big box stores. Normally I do try to go almost 100% “small” though. 😉 Aloha!

We do a combo of both small business & black friday. I think it’s fun to get out and get a great deal on black friday but I also want to support small businesses in our area plus they always have an interesting & unexpected item that I didn’t know I needed!

I buy small when I can. Personally, I’m trying not to buy at all. I think this year I’ll try to make as many gifts as possible. I better start painting now!
I haven’t started shopping as yet because we just do not have the funds.
It will all depends but yes, we’ll definitely be supporting our local businesses.
I wont do black Friday.
So we’ll see how the funds go, Plus the gifts will be for the children.
Such a great idea to showcase small businesses!
Have a great weekend girl. I hope things are on the mend with your home and fixing up.

I’ll be working on that Saturday and Black Friday. Even if I wasn’t working, I’d be avoiding Black Friday like the plague. We have a quaint little downtown with lots of nice shops so it’s fun shopping the small businesses here.

I love the concept of Small Business Saturdays. With the monolith of companies taking over America its important to recognize the can-do spirit of Small Businesses. Thanks for bringing this to light.
