What a wet and wild weekend it’s been for those of us on the East Coast.  Those of us further inland in PA were supposed to be left out of the wild party, but Irene shifted a little during her track, which of course enveloped us in wind and rain.  Not as bad as those further East from us – here’s hoping everyone was able to stay safe and dry.

For Monday’s Music Movies me its a freebie week – with Irene’s crazy partying ways this weekend, I had to find some songs to denote that.  First up is one of my favorite artists, Jimmy Buffett with “Tryin’ to Reason With Hurricane Season”:

Tryin’ to Reason With Hurricane Season Lyrics
Jimmy Buffett

Squalls out on the gulf stream,
Big storms coming soon.
I passed out in my hammock,
God, I slept way past noon.
Stood up and tried to focus,
I hoped I wouldn’t have to look far.
I knew I could use a Bloody Mary,
So I stumbled next door to the bar.

[Chorus:]
And now I must confess,
I could use some rest.
I can’t run at this pace very long.
Yes, it’s quite insane,
I think it hurts my brain.
But it cleans me out and then I can go on.

There’s something about this Sunday
It’s a most peculiar gray
Strolling down the avenue
That’s known as A1A
I was feeling tired, then I got inspired.
And I knew that it wouldn’t last long
So all alone I walked back home, sat on my beach
And then I made up this song.

[Chorus]

Well, the wind is blowin’ harder now
Fifty knots or there abouts,
There’s white caps on the ocean.
And I’m watching for water spouts
It’s time to close the shutters
It’s time to go inside.
In a week I’ll be in gay Paris;
That’s a mighty long airplane ride.

[Chorus]
Yes, It cleans me out and then I can go on.

And of course we can’t let this one go by, Scorpion with “Rock You Like A Hurricane”:

Rock You Like A Hurricane Lyrics
Scorpions

It’s early morning
The sun comes out
Last night was shaking
And pretty loud
My cat is purring
And scratches my skin
So what is wrong
With another sin
The bitch is hungry
She needs to tell
So give her inches
And feed her well
More days to come
New places to go
I’ve got to leave
It’s time for a show

Here I am, rock you like a hurricane
Here I am, rock you like a hurricane

My body is burning
It starts to shout
Desire is coming
It breaks out loud
Lust is in cages
Till storm breaks loose
Just have to make it
With someone I choose
The night is calling
I have to go
The wolf is hungry
He runs to show
He’s licking his lips
He’s ready to win
On the hunt tonight
For love at first sting

Here I am, rock you like a hurricane
Here I am, rock you like a hurricane
Here I am, rock you like a hurricane
Here I am, rock you like a hurricane

And finally, an old song that probably got more play time this weekend than ever, Lead Belly with “Good Night Irene”:

Good Night Irene Lyrics
Lead Belly

Last Saturday night, I got married,
me and my wife settled down
Now me and my wife are parted,
I’m gonna take another stroll downtown

Sometimes I live in the country,
sometimes I live in town
Sometimes I take a great notion,
to jump into the river and drown

I love Irene, God knows I do,
I’ll love her till the seas run dry
But if Irene should turn me down,
I’d take the morphine and die

Stop rambling, stop your gambling,
stop staying out late at night
Go home to your wife and your family,
stay there by your fireside bright

Here’s hoping that as the hurricane season continues you and your loved ones will remain safe and dry.  Enjoy your Monday!

  1. As a Jamaican I know what storms and hurricanes are like! I also have a lot of relatives who live in the affected states. Thanks for sharing these songs! I was hearing them for the first time. Interesting post.

  2. I don’t think I’ve ever heard that Jimmy Buffet song but the lyrics are completely him.
And thank you for the books offer! If you have them I would love to use them. Sprite is really working hard on sounding out words, we had a good 5 minute period last night where she was batting a thousand with the simple words I threw out at her.

  3. Wonderful choices!! I am so glad you are o.k. I have been worried about all my East Coast friends but slowly they are checking in. Many still without power.

  4. Lol, awesome choices…..I sing good night Irene to my kids when they refuse to go to sleep….they don’t like it that much. They know once I start that song they are done and nothing will change that….

  5. How very appropriate! I am so glad you joined our little troop! Did you know we’ve been doing this for a whole year as of last Monday & not one of us noticed? We’re just having too much fun! LOL Is this healthy? Woo Hoo! Totally love these songs. I played Jimmy Buffet twice. ~hehe~ hugzzzz

  6. Well, that was three good picks for today. Loved Jimmy Buffet, and haven’t heard the other one before. And Good Night Irene…I haven’t heard that one in two many years to remember.

  7. Great songs… I’ve never heard of the Jimmy Buffet song, but I LOVED the video.
Of course I have loved the Scorpion’s Song since I was a teen, and I also posted “Goodnight Irene” but not such a great video version of it.
Glad you didn’t have too much damage and we were really lucky that it missed us. We have another one headed our way by labor day weekend, wish us luck!
