August is such a bittersweet month – it marks the winding down of summer as last minute vacations are taken before school starts – not to mention the flurry of getting things ready for the start of school.  You know, like chilling that bottle of champagne to make a toast on the first day of school…what, it’s just me that celebrates the start of school?

Today being Monday, it’s time for some great music.  This week’s theme is Artists or Groups that start with the letter “M”.  Since one of my favorite artists sports both names beginning with the letter “M”, I decided to make her my focus for today. But not in a stalkerish mode.  Hopefully.

I have been a rabid avid fan of Martina McBride  (how’s that for the double-whammy with the letter “M”?) since hearing her song Concrete Angel in 2002.  Followed the next year by this song that I’ve dubbed ‘our song’ for Princess Nagger and myself:

In My Daughter’s Eyes Lyrics
Martina McBride

In my daughter’s eyes, I am a hero.
I am strong and wise,
And I know no fear.
But the truth is plain to see:
She was sent to rescue me,
I see who I wanna be, in my daughter’s eyes.

In my daughter’s eyes, everyone is equal,
Darkness turns to light,
And the world is at peace.
This miracle God gave to me,
Gives me strength when I am weak.
I find reason to believe, in my daughter’s eyes.

When she wraps her hand around my finger,
Oh, it puts a smile in my heart.
Everything becomes a little clearer.
I realize what life is all about.
It’s hangin’ on when your heart has had enough;
It’s givin’ more when you feel like givin’ up.
I’ve seen the light: it’s in my daughter’s eyes.

In my daughter’s eyes, I can see the future.
A reflection of who I am,
And what will be.
And though she’ll grow and some day leave:
Maybe raise a family,
When I’m gone, I hope you’ll see,
How happy she made me,
For I’ll be there, in my daughter’s eyes.

Then of course came this song that all us ‘girls’ can relate to (and sage advice from Martina):

This One’s For The Girls Lyrics
Martina McBride

This is for all you girls ’bout thirteen
High school can be so rough, can be so mean
Hold onto, onto your innocence
Stand your ground when everybody’s giving in

This one’s for the girls

This is for all you girls about twenty-five
In little apartments just trying to get by
Living on, on dreams and Spaghetti-Os
Wondering where your life is gonna go

This one’s for the girls
Who’ve ever had a broken heart
Who’ve wished upon a shooting star
You’re beautiful the way you are
This one’s for the girls
Who love without holding back
Who dream with everything they have
All around the world
This one’s for the girls

This is for all you girls about forty-two
Tossing pennies into the fountain of youth
Every laugh, laugh line on your face
Made you who you are today

This one’s for the girls
Who’ve ever had a broken heart
Who’ve wished upon a shooting star
You’re beautiful the way you are
This one’s for the girls
Who love without holding back
Who dream with everything they have
All around the world
This one’s for the girls

Yeah we’re all the same inside
From one to ninety-nine

This one’s for the girls
Who’ve ever had a broken heart
Who’ve wished upon a shooting star
You’re beautiful the way you are
This one’s for the girls
Who love without holding back
Who dream with everything they have
All around the world
This one’s for the girls

Yeah, this one’s for the girls

Her latest song, “Teenage Daughters” has me really wishing I could find that ‘pause’ button – Princess Nagger will be hitting the beginning of the teen years in just 4-1/2 short years.  I see my future in this song:

Teenage Daughters Lyrics
Martina McBride

I ain’t complainin’
But I’m tired, so I’m just sayin’
What I think
And if we’re being honest
Than honestly I think I need a drink

My baby’s growin’ up
She think’s she’s fallin’ all in love
And that I hate her
At seventeen, she’s just like me when I was seventeen
So I don’t blame her

[Bridge]
Do do do do
Do do do do
What are we gonna do?
Do do do do
Do do do do
What are we gonna do about it?

[Chorus]
Remember when we use to be
Everything they ever need
We had them believing we were cool
It’s like it happened over night
We’re always wrong, they’re always right
We use to be the one’s breakin’ the rules
Now we’re just mothers, we’re just fathers of
Teenage Daughters

She rolls her eyes when I’m funny
But she’s sweet when she wants money and her freedom
Oh my god, she’s got a car
Swears they wont go far
And I wish I believed ’em

[Bridge]

[Chorus]

Their beautiful, wild and free
Everything we wish we could be
But their still crazy
Oh you know, the make us crazy

Remember when we use to be
Everything they ever need
We had them believing we were cool
It’s like it happened over night
We’re always wrong, they’re always right
We use to be the ones breakin’ the rules
Now we’re just mothers, we’re just fathers of
Teenage Daughters

Yeah Teenage Daughters

I ain’t complainin’
But I’m just tired, so I’m sayin’
What I think
If we’re being honest
Than honestly, I think I need a drink

And, because I’m not 100% a rule follower, I have to add this one last song by another of my favorite artists, Reba (whose last name is McEntire, so it technically counts, even though I think she’s pretty much just going by her first name like so many other artists seem to be doing…at least those that actually have a unique first name.  Or not.)  I always crank this song up when I hear it come on the radio:

Turn On The Radio Lyrics
Reba McEntire

No good two timin’ lies comin’ outta your mouth.
Cheatin’ mistreatin’ games that you play brought you down.
Broke my heart, tore it apart, look who’s got the last laugh now.
Don’t you come crawlin’ back begging please on your knees,
Baby if you’re missin’ me…

Well, you can hear me on the radio!
You wanna turn me on, turn on your stereo!
You can sing along, while they’re playin’ our song
how you done me wrong…
Baby crank it up!
Until you blow the speakers out your Chevy truck.
So listen Romeo, when you’re feelin’ kinda lonely,
let me tell you where to go.
Turn on the radio!

Try to call, twitter me, text until your fingers bleed.
Oh the DJ’s the only way you’re ever gonna hear from me.
If you’re reminiscing and you’re missin’ me this much
and you really wanna stay in touch.

Well, you can hear me on the radio!
You wanna turn me on, turn on your stereo!
You can sing along, while they’re playin’ our song
how you done me wrong…
Baby crank it up!
Until you blow the speakers out your Chevy truck.
So listen Romeo, when you’re feelin’ kinda lonely,
let me tell you where to go…

Turn on the radio!
Whoaaoooa!
Turn on the radio!
Turn on the radio!
Oh! Oh! Oh Oh Oh! Oh! Ohh!

Oh you can hear me on the radio!
You wanna turn me on, turn on your stereo!
You can sing along, while they’re playin’ my song
how you done me wrong…
Baby crank it up!
Until you blow the speakers out your Chevy truck.
So listen Romeo, when you’re feelin’ kinda lonely
let me tell you where to go…
when you’re feelin’ kinda lonely,
let me tell you where to go…

Turn on the radio!
Turn on your radio!
Turn on, turn on the radio!
Turn on the radio!
Turn on the radio!
Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Ohhh!
Turn On The Radio!

Time now to turn on the radio…or better yet, hop around and enjoy some great music!  Enjoy your Monday!

  1. I’m knee (waist) deep in all the teen age stuff…. boyfriend, attitude, you name it! I may need a case of your wine!

    Happy Monday!

  2. Those are some great tunes, but my music education continues. Sorry I never heard them before. I think I like the last one the best. Always did kind of like Reba. Hope you get a chance to stop by and see me too and maybe you’ll have a minute to vote in my contest. I’d appreciate it a lot. Have a great day!

  3. Oh my goodness, I love Martina McBride!!! My dad actually played guitar for her many years ago…. Such a wonderful lady & what an amazing voice…. Great song choices…. I’m actually hosting a Music Monday Blog Hop as well over at http://www.OliviaBlueMusic.com/ – so feel free to join me… (Geeez, I hope it’s not rude to “self-promote” my own blog hop…) Anyways, I hope you have a great week, Miss Stacy!!! 🙂

  4. It will be awhile before my kids reach the teenage years.. not really looking forward to it as yet.. savouring their baby/toddler/elementary school student stage.

  6. I’m so sad when I think about my girls going back to school and summer being almost over. I might need to drown my sorrows in some champagne too. 😉

Martina McBride is fabulous. I don’t listen to her as much as I should. She has such a great sound. Thanks for the reminder to listen to her again. Love the line about “girls about to turn 42”. Ain’t that the truth?!

Thanks for the MM shout out and calling me awesome! You ROCK, mama! xox 🙂

  7. Oh I just love Martina and of course Reba!! What great Monday fun!
I hope you are having a wonderful summer; I am hating that school is starting soon now that I’m a grandmother…but I do remember celebrating just a bit back in the day:)

  8. The first one is the song my daughter danced too at her wedding so you made me blubber all over the dam place. GET THE MOP! The one about the teenagers I sent to my granddaughter who is turning 13 in October going on 25 of course. Love your picks girlfriend. Never heard the one by Reba & I totally love it. You go girl! hugsssss

  9. As the mother of a teenage daughter I love this post! I had not heard the Reba song so really enjoyed it.

I was going to join in with Music Monday but my song on my post is sung by Nat King Cole and it is about summer…nothing “M” in it at all! Maybe I will be able to link up next week.

Thanks so much for linking this wonderful post to my Pinning and Singing Linky Party. I really appreciate your support!

Best wishes for a wonderful week,
    Natasha

  10. I love Martina McBride, too and even though I don’t have daughters, I have sons, I adore the first two songs. I have never heard “Teenage Daughters” but really like that song – it is SO true. As for Reba, you followed the rules, beause of her last name.
You totally rock, BTW – loved all your picks – have a great week, my friend. =)
