One of our many stops while on vacation in Iowa, was of course the Mississippi – Princess Nagger was tickled to see that there were real live pelicans hanging out there:
My mom was hanging out in what looked like a mini oasis with picnic tables watching the river and the pelicans:
The Mighty Mississippi:
Soaring pelicans
(you can always click to enlarge to see them better):
As we were getting ready to leave (and as my battery was dying) lots more pelicans swooped in for some fun:
Princess Nagger enjoyed hanging out with the pelicans on the Mighty Mississippi:
There were supposed to be eagles hanging around in the general vicinity too – we didn’t see any, but we might have been there at the wrong time of day. Maybe next year!

Great photos of pelicans.. I remember the last time I saw a pelican was in Australia when I was studying.. they are not common here in Asia.
I love the photos of the pelicans, but not nearly as much as the one of the beautiful young lady at the end. : )
It looks like a blast!
Great pictures! Every time I see a pelican flying, I think they look so prehistoric.

Pelicans are such a treat to watch and for those of us that grew up on the west coast, so unusual. Looks like PN was having fun.
Beautiful photos! I can tell you had a winderful time!
Pelicans are always fun until one of them poops on your head. ๐ (Speaking from experience, of course.)
Wonderful pics! I’ve driven across the Mississippi but never gotten to actually hang out and look closely at it like that!
Looks beautiful! New follower from WW
Great shots! Yeah, I would imagine you don’t get many pelicans in your neck of the woods. We take them for granted here in Florida. ๐
Wow, that’s a lot of pelicans! Very cool.
Those are super cool!
I know that I’ve taken the pelicans for granted down here in FL!
Great pictures. I love pelicans!
Great shots! Tell your little princess that where I live in Louisiana, the brown pelicans are our state bird. ๐ (Not the mosquito) hehe!
Im in louisiana too. love seeing pelicans!
I think pelicans are really cool.
Fantastic shots. How cool to see all those Pelicans!
Great pictures of a wonderful place. The Pelicans are a wonderful bonus.
Those are sure some big birds and they sure look like fun to watch!
On my wedding day a HUGE pelican swooped down and glided right along side our condo balcony. It was beautiful. (I’d never seen one before.) The photographer (who was snapping shots of me getting ready) snagged one of me and my sister with our mouths open and pointing at the pelican. It’s one of my favorites of the day. They are really neat creatures to see up close.

Beautiful pictures! I’m always in awe of how wide that river is! Happy Wednesday and thanks for stopping by!
She’s beautiful, and great scenery. Looks like a nice vacation, especially with 3 generations. ๐
Thanks for the linky and Happy Wednesday.
Your daughter is so cute! Love all the water pictures, makes me want go swimming!
Good thing you were there then instead of during RAGBRAI! Would’ve been a little crowded….
I love pelicans! That is so cool!! ๐
What a sweet picture at the end! I love the one with the sere grass as well โ it looks so stark.
Looks like a very pretty place to me!
It sounds like you had a great time while in Iowa. I love when we get to visit. Such a beautiful state.
I bet it had to be cooler by the river. I am used to seeing seagulls, not pelicans. Did Princess see them scooping up food? even tho I am melting in this horrible heat advisory, I am NOT wanting winter to return… cold & snow hurts… a relief in the humidity may be nice tho! Stay cool!
The view must have been breathtaking!
Wow, and not just any pelicans, but white pelicans. I have only seen them a few places in my state (Florida), and only in winter — so score for you! Your girl is so pretty. ๐
Great photos! Following!

I swear I saw one the other day around here.
I loved your pictures!
I like the oasis idea.
Beautiful shots. Looks like you spent some great time along the Mississippi!!
How cool to see pelicans on the Mississippi! I went kayaking on Sunday and saw an eagles nest but no eagle. I did see a kingfisher though! I love watching birdies ๐
Those pictures are beautiful. I love pelicans.
I love how the pelicans are just hanging out.
I love the pictures and I especially love the park benches where you could sit and watch.
I have always been scared of pelicans, they have such big mouths. What if they ate me?
Great pics!
First of all, Princess Nagger is so cute! She kinda looks like Violet Affleck. ๐ I love pelicans, and you’re so lucky that they swooped by in herds! ๐
Great shots. Too bad you didn’t get to see any eagles. I am your newest GFC follower. Happy Wordless Wednesday. Please stop by and see mine.

Great pictures! I always wanted to visit the might Mississippi….maybe one day.
Looks like it was a wonderful day. Here in Louisiana we have pelicans everywhere. They are our state bird. I hope you got to see one dive into the water because that is truly a site to see. It looks like they nosedive straight into the water and then come out with a fish. Happy WW!
Come on down here, we’ve got pelicans! The pictures are great, love the one of your mom in the distance…
It must be fun watching the pelicans soaring and “playing”. ๐
