A couple of weeks ago the hubby came home from work with a cardboard box looking all sad and dejected.  I thought maybe he’d gotten his pink slip, but no, when he opened the box, this was inside:

Apparently someone at his work discovered four baby kittens in the corner of the dumpster area – the mama cat was nowhere to be found until they removed the kittens, of course.  When she showed up, she was mad as a hatter – which is totally understandable, the kittens appeared to be little more than a month old.  They called the SPCA who sent the police – since the mama cat was all riled up and wouldn’t let anyone near her, the officers shot the cat dead.

Whaaaa?  I can see them being nervous about getting bit by the cat – after all, you never know about rabies.  But shoot it dead on a college campus?  I’d say that was over the top.  Along with my hubby, three other people stepped up and adopted the now orphaned kittens.  When hubby brought this little one home, it looked so forlorn and scraggly, with intense blue eyes.  I thought about taking a picture of him/her, but quite frankly wasn’t sure it was going to make it, and didn’t want pictorial reminders to Princess Nagger of such a cute little innocent life lost.

But now?  He/she is thriving nicely and growing like crazy – right now we’re keeping it in the Summer House so it doesn’t get harassed by our two adult cats in the house – so every time we’re out here on our computers (read: all the time), we have a little buddy hanging around.   Or trying to take over our keyboards:

Princess Nagger thought it particularly funny that it opened a Word document on my laptop simply by walking across the keyboard, and ‘typed’ what you see above.  We haven’t given it a name yet – we’re sort of waiting until we can figure out if it’s a boy or a girl, and to how his/her personality grows to dub him/her with an appropriate name.

We’ve tossed around the idea of naming it Lucy if she’s a girl, since she’s already getting into all sorts of trouble – like jumping from the man-loft to the first floor of the Summer House.  Which caused Princess Nagger to exclaim “The kitty landed on its feet!!”  And which probably means he/she has 7 or 8 of its 9 lives left.  If it’s a boy, Lucky – because obviously it is.  I’ll keep you posted.

  2. I think shooting the cat was a little overboard too. After all, she was probably just using her motherly instinct and trying to protect her babies. That kitten is just too cute. Almost makes me want to go out and get one….almost.
