For some it is a long weekend, an opportunity for a mini holiday, time to enjoy summer before it is over, a weekend of picnics, swimming and the sight and smell of barbeque smoke in the air
The celebration of Labor Day was first suggested by Peter J McGuire, founder of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters
On 5 September 1882 the nations first Labor Day was celebrated with a large parade in New York City, sponsored by the Central Labor Union
Peter McGuire chose this date because it fell more or less between Independence Day and Thanksgiving Day
Over ten thousand men left their jobs and paraded up Manhattans Fifth Avenue from 14th to 42nd Street, then they had a picnic, dance and fireworks
In 1884 the group held a parade on the first Monday of September. It was decided that all future labor parades would be held on the first Monday of September and the day would be referred to as Labor Day
In 1887 Oregon became the first state to formally establish Labor Day. This was soon followed by the District of Columbia
In 1894 Congress declared Labor Day a legal holiday in recognition of all the nations workers
Parades and speeches by politicians and labor leaders are typical on Labor Day
Today Labor Day is celebrated in a number of countries around the world
