Earth Day is this Thursday, and I must confess I wasn’t ‘tuned in’ to ‘going green’ as much before Princess Nagger came along.  Don’t get me wrong – I diligently recycled.  But being concerned what my cleaning products were putting into the air?  Meh, not so much.  After Princess Nagger made her arrival, however, I started being more aware and reading labels a lot more than I used to.

When I was contacted recently to try out the Seventh Generation disinfecting products, I didn’t even hesitate – I’m always on the lookout for better products to keep things sanitary, yet be safe to use at the same time.  And for it to smell good?  Even better.

The disinfectants contain thymol, a component of the herb thyme, and can be used on hard surfaces including counter tops, plastic cutting boards, highchair trays as well as children’s toys. Best of all, they kill over 99.99 percent of germs* naturally and are effective against the Influenza A Virus, including H1N1.

Seventh Generation has partnered with eco-lifestyle consultant and author, Alexandra Zissu, whose new book, The Conscious Kitchen, discusses what’s good for your health, what’s good for the planet and what tastes great.

I started off with the disinfectant cleaner – the aroma of lemongrass and thyme was such a pleasant experience, especially compared to the name brand product I had been using.  I didn’t realize I had a habit of holding my breath when using the other stuff because the smell overwhelmed me when using it.  Not so with this cleaner.  It did a great job cleaning the counter tops and all other surfaces I tackled in both the kitchen and living room – and I loved that it didn’t leave streaks or residue behind.

Next I put the disinfectant wipes to the test:

The only trouble I had with these was figuring out where the first one started to put it through the feeder notch inside the lid.  These had an interesting almost foamy/sudsy moisture – which intrigued me to find out how effective they would wipe surfaces without leaving a soapy residue.  But they didn’t leave any soapy residue behind at all – in fact, they had more moisture than the disinfectant wipes I currently use, which made then tackle the bigger messier jobs with no effort.

The final test was the bathroom cleaner:

I was not disappointed.  It did the job and did it well.  And the best part (aside from the fact that it’s non-toxic and kills 99.9% of the germs) is that when I was done, I didn’t have that lingering chemical smell hanging in the air like I normally do.  In fact, when the hubby got home from work, he commented that the house smelled great – as opposed to the day before, when he asked if one of the animals had had an accident because of the pungent cleaner smell still hanging in the air…from a previous day.

With both of the spray disinfectants I used the recycled paper towels they sent me:

The paper towels were absorbent and strong, and didn’t leave any fuzzy lint behind.  A winner in my book!  If you are planning on buying some of Seventh Generation’s products, be sure to scope out their coupons for some great savings.
