A Year Later and I’m Still Glad My Name’s Not Barbara

As I get back into the swing of things and try to get caught up on all my missed virtual moments, this week’s Spin Cycle is an easy one – Jen graciously assigned us to pick a post from our archives that makes us smile, or whatever – so I’m picking the ‘whatever’ mode.  Because I can. So, for your reading pleasure, I bring you “I’m Glad My Name’s Not Barbara”.  Enjoy!

I’m Glad My Name’s Not Barbara

No offense to the ‘Barbara’s’ of the world…but I’m glad my name’s not Barbara. Why? I’m glad you asked…

A big burly Sheriff dude just came knocking on our door.

Princess Nagger was in the house watching Cyberchase and having her after school snack while hubby and I were in the Summer House hanging out on our computers.

The intercom rang, and since I had just come out of the house after fixing Princess Nagger’s earrings, I figured maybe she was having trouble again. Instead, she said:

PN: “I think there’s someone knocking on the door.”

Me: “There’s someone knocking on the door? Front door or back door?”

PN: “Back door…there’s definitely someone knocking on the back door.”

With the phone still to my ear, I peek out the Summer House door and see a burly Sheriff dude at the back door with a clipboard of papers, so I step outside.

Me: “Can I help you with something?”

Sheriff Dude: “Barbara?”

Me (looking very confused): “Ummm….no…”

Sheriff Dude: “Is this XXXX?” (asking about the house number)

Me: “No, it’s XXXX…” (glancing back into the Summer House door) “Honey? Do you where XXXX is around here?”

Hubby: “I think that’s next door over there…” (indicating our neighbors house).

The house numbers don’t run in sequential order on our road, so it can get confusing.  The officer didn’t look all too happy (after all, it was raining, and our dog decided it was a great time to sneak past me and greet the not-so-happy officer.  With his muddy paws.  On the officer’s clean uniform pants.)

Then the Sheriff Dude walked around the side of the house opposite the neighbor of interest, possibly to go unseen, as perhaps he was there to serve some official papers, who knows.

All I can say is that I’m very glad of two things – one, that Princess Nagger was smart enough not to open the back door for anyone, even when he was wearing something like this:

And two, that my name is not Barbara.
