Welcome to this week’s Valentine’s Edition of Aloha Friday.

“In Hawaii, Aloha Friday is the day that we take it easy and look forward to the weekend. So I thought that on Fridays I would take it easy on posting, too. Therefore, I’ll ask a simple question for you to answer. Nothing that requires a lengthy response.”

Since tomorrow is Valentine’s Day, most people are thinking about love. My question for this week is:

How did your significant other propose to you (or you to them)?

Mine is actually a pretty funny story – my hubby always referred to me as his fiance from fairly early on, even though there was no official proposal at the time and no ring. On Valentine’s Day 2000, he had a really bad cold and was feeling miserable, so instead of going out to dinner that night, I offered to come over to his apartment and cook dinner for him. He didn’t have much of an appetite and looked really miserable, so I told him we should maybe postpone our Valentine celebration until the weekend, or at least until he was feeling better. But he insisted I open his Valentine’s Day gift from him, because he didn’t want me to wait. He handed me a wrapped box the size of a ring box, and explained: “I could only get part of it for now, when I save up some more, I’ll buy the rest”.

I’m all excited, thinking he was talking about an engagement ring/wedding ring set, that he got the engagement ring, but would buy the wedding ring at a later date. The wrapping paper fell to the side and revealed a velvet ring box. I looked at him and smiled, then opened the box, and tried not to let my disappointment show. Inside the ring box was indeed a ring – but just the setting. There was no stone, just empty prongs staring at me. I looked at my fiance inquisitively, and he reiterated that he couldn’t afford the whole thing, that he would pick out a nice diamond at a later time. I tucked the box away safely – I was impressed that he remembered I like both silver and gold, so the setting he picked out was both yellow and white gold. It was perfect.

Over the next couple of years, any time we’d be at a jewelry store he’d ask my opinion about different rings and/or diamonds. On the fourth of July weekend in 2002, we were watching a movie when he casually mentioned: “Oh, I picked something up for you today.” He handed over a ring box and told me to open it. This time, when I opened the box, there was the ring setting he had picked out for me, but this time the prongs held the most beautiful princess cut diamond I had ever seen. I gave him a hug and a kiss – then asked him if there was a question that went along with the ring…he replied: “Oh, yeah, I guess there is…will you marry me?”

Happy Aloha Friday!

  1. What a sweet story 🙂

Hubby was here visiting me. The AC at my parent’s house had died and I just wanted to rest. He insisted on going for a walk under the stars. Little did I know that he had a plan. When we got back by my parents house he got down on one knee and proposed. What I did not realize was the night before he asked my parents for their blessing and they knew it was coming that day, along with the rest of the free world 😉

  2. Awww! We were married on the fourth of July! Must be a good date!

We actually got engaged on Christmas. That’s about the gist of the story!

  3. Good question! I was about a 4 hour drive away from him (or so I thought) visiting my mom. I decided to walk a 5k with her in downtown. He showed up with his daughter at the finish line and they were each holding up signs they had made the night before “Will you marry me” and “Please marry my dad!”. I had been waiting and waiting for a proposal, and he managed to surprise me after all.

  4. We had been dating for awhile and knew each other for years. We were watching tv one night having popcorn and he just asked! The ring was in the popcorn bowl!
Thanks for sharing! I have posted a question on my blog too!

  6. What a fun story! I don't think I would have been patient enough to wait for that stone though. lol

We were on the phone (he was in Korea w/ the USAF) & was telling me about his follow on assignment to Norway. Then he asked if we were going "to do it" & that was it! We were married 6 weeks later. And no, we didn't end up in Norway; instead we went to England!

  7. That is a great story. I am like Sue, I wouldnt have been able to wait that long. My husband is even less patient than I so there is no way he could have waited. Thank you for sharing that story with us. It ties into your Sunday stories.

  8. He took me to a New Year’s Party at a Hotel and got us a room. He took us up to the room to watch the ball drop. As soon as it did he got down on one knee and popped THE question!
