We have no carpets in our house.  I’d love to get a huge area rug for the living room one of these days to replace the one hubby ‘borrowed’ so the drummer of his band would have a place to set up his drum set in the summer house years ago.  I use the term ‘borrowed’ loosely, as I never got it back.  So now we just enjoy the antique wood floors in our antique house – which I love.

Add to the wood floors two dogs, a cat, a dove and a Princess Nagger.  It’s a never-ending cycle sweeping and dusting and sweeping some more.  My usual choice of floor cleaning were these:

I relied on the broom more than the Electrolux stick vac – which tells you how ineffective that stick vac really was.  Of course the broom tended to take extra time to sweep everything up, and still left quite a bit behind, particularly the dust and dirt that fell literally between the cracks.

I’m purposely leaving out our Kirby:

Not only is it heavy and cumbersome, especially when maneuvering the stairs, but I have a love/hate relationship with it since we were suckered into buying it from those persistent door-to-door salesmen when I was barely on maternity leave.  Especially now that we have no carpets and can’t use half of the extra accessories we were conned into buying with the deluxe kit.  But that’s a post for another day.

Enter the Swiffer SweeperVac:

Let’s see how this (literally) measures up:

A little taller than the stick vac and shorter than the broom – a perfect fit right in the middle.   It’s lighter than the stick vac and has a swivel head, which scored points with me right off the bat.   But would it really be the answer to what I need?  Princess Nagger was anxious to try it out:

PN:  “It’s light and easy enough for a kid to use!  You can put that in your review, Mama, everyone would probably want to know that their kids can help clean up around the house.”

And she was right – she was a big helper (who am I to deny her desire to clean the floor?) sweeping up the random hair and dirt from the dogs and herself (and don’t get me started on the pine needles from the huge branch she thought was a good idea to bring into the house).  It worked like a charm, and quite possibly she’ll be willing to do the sweeping/vacuuming a little more often with the handy Swiffer Sweeper Vac!

I finally got my turn to put it through its paces.  I loved how lightweight it is, and the swivel head proved invaluable as I rushed around sweeping the stairs and getting rid of the dust, dirt and hair that is a daily occurrence on our floors right before company showed up Saturday night.  It took me half the time to do the clean up than it usually does with the broom and dustpan – sure, the little cup collecting the dirt and hair has to be emptied periodically, but even with that necessity, I still got the floors cleaned in short order.

P&G sent along a tester kit with the Swiffer to really see how it rises to the challenge of everything imaginable.  Princess Nagger thought it was hysterical that she got to dump dirt, cereal, (synthetic) hair and food crumbs on the floor on purpose to have the Swiffer clean up for us.   I was impressed – it did much better than my old broom and dust pan for sure!
