Those of you who have been reading me for a while know how obsessive Princess Nagger can be about things that interest her.  From dinosaurs to dragons to Warrior Cats to Minecraft – her latest and greatest obsession is Portal.  I know, you’re thinking to yourself “What the heck is Portal?”

PortalLogo

Portal is a 2007 first-person puzzle-platform video game that primarily comprises a series of puzzles that must be solved by teleporting the player’s character and simple objects using “the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device”, a device that can create inter-spatial portals between two flat planes.

Portals

Still confused?  It’s a game that makes you use your brain to figure out how to get from Point A to Point B using a portal gun to create portals to go through to get where you want to go.  I know, it’s still mind boggling, isn’t it?

I have to say, though, that I like that Princess Nagger enjoys games that challenge her brain – she is a brainiac, after all, so exercise in that manner is a good thing.  So long as she also spends time running around and not parked in front of one of her screens.

She kept bugging me about the replica portal gun she really, really wanted, so I made a deal with her that if she cleaned up her mess in the living room, I’d get one for her:

Not only did she clean up her mess, but she also packed and stacked boxes of her stuff to get ready for our move in August:

I’d say she earned that portal gun, wouldn’t you?  She impatiently waited for the UPS driver to drop off the package we’d been tracking online, and couldn’t contain her excitement when it finally arrived yesterday:

She couldn’t wait to get started playing with it, running around the backyard pretending to go through portal after portal:

She put her hair in a ponytail and said she needs to get a white tank top and an orange jumpsuit so she can become this character from Portal 2:

Portal2Chell

She even wants to try to make the funky boots that the character Chell is wearing.  I love that she dreams big.

Are any of your kids big dreamers and have ‘out there’ imaginative play?

  1. I, too, have a Portal obsession, which my husband totally enables. He got me the Aperture Replica Gun last Mother’s Day (it’s a little bigger than PN’s), and a copy of Portal 2 for the Xbox 360 even though we already had it on PS3 — simply so that I could unlock a Companion Cube and portal device for my avatar. I know way too much of GLaDOS’s dialogue off the top of my head, and I customized my phone and its case to be Portal-themed. (Seriously, a lot of the sounds and dialogue are great alert tones!)

Sometimes I think that I miiiiiight need an intervention.

Oh! But, ThinkGeek sells replicas of Chell’s jumpsuit, as well as the Aperture-logo tank, as well as some really cute socks to finish off the look 😉

  2. My 24 year old daughter is a fan of Portal also. She’s friends with the girl who made the Wheatley puppet that is big on YouTube. I’m sure she could explain it way better than I can.

  3. We haven’t reach video game obsession yet! Most recently I let one of my sons dress up as Buzz Lightyear for the day, even when we went grocery shopping. Now that was an adventure!

  4. Just another reason why I think you have the coolest daughter ever! 🙂 Her way of thinking is so cool… you can tell her brain is just constantly working.

& how cool of a mom are you to get her a real portal gun!!!!! Now if she figures out how to really make it work, I’m gonna pass out. With her – its possible 🙂

  5. So fun that not only she dreams big but that she worked hard to get something she wanted too, a win- win. My son is a huge dreamer always describing and telling me about the things he has built, everything from cars to roller coasters to houses… someday I really do think he is going to build something big.

  6. Oh, I give up with that dumb picture. You have my link that’s good enough. I did exactly what you said and I put the link for today’s post & I picked a pic from the post. 🙁 NOTHING! Anyway, my kids use to play dress-up a bit, but they were really kind of TV kids I think or rather I should say playing by other kids house because I was a single Mom with four kids and always working. As far as now I do know my grandsons love to do that. I guess I missed out on a lot of cool stuff. Have a great weekend.

  7. I’ve never heard of Portal. My boys tend to go more towards the army games. I like that you used ‘manipulation’ *ahem motivation to get her to clean her room. Good Mom!
