Hello Tuesday! Last Tuesday of September, first Tuesday of fall!

Of course Mother Nature has decided she’s not quite done with summer weather, though, we have a few more days of extra heat before it finally looks like it will settle down to ‘normal’. We haven’t had any measurable rain since the end of May – which is definitely not ‘normal’ for the Pacific Northwest.

And to think we had that late snow in April:

Not once, but twice! It was crazy. My cherry trees were in full bloom when the snow hit both weeks back in April – so naturally the cherries weren’t productive this year. At least my Quince trees are late bloomers (they aren’t ripe and ready to pick until next month) so the double-whammy spring snows didn’t annihilate that fruit.

Curios to see how fall and winter will play out this year – the Farmer’s Almanac apparently predicts that it will be colder than normal – which wouldn’t surprise me, we seem to go from one extreme to the other in recent years.

Speaking of going from one extreme to the other… Our house was built in 1930, and typically during those early years floors were nice wood floors that got covered up over the years based on ‘trends’. You know, like shag carpet in the 60s or 70s.

Luckily our house didn’t come with shag carpeting, but the upstairs hallway and landing plus the two upstairs bedrooms were carpeted (not very well based on some of the ripples) and we’d been talking for a while about finding out what lies beneath the carpeting.

We figured it could be just about anything, depending on what condition the floors were before the flippers fixed it up. This house was a rental at one point – our neighbors said there were 15 people living here during that time, which in and of itself is scary enough, but I also found the ‘before’ pictures of what the interior and exterior of this house looked like before the flippers fixed it up – it was pretty scary looking! But I digress.

We finally decided to at least pull up a corner of the carpet to see if it was the original wood floors, or if we’d be dealing with typical subflooring. It’s the original wood floors! We pulled the carpet up off the upstairs landing and hallway, and were pleasantly surprised that the floors were still in good shape, save for the reddish stain and the mega splatters of paint and glue:

Yes, Maxwell was supervising – and if he looks a little different, we had him shaved during the heatwaves, so his curls are now finally starting to come back.

The hubby went to town removing the bajillion staples and sanded the floors. So very happy they look so great – now we’ll just put a protective sealant on them and replace some molding. But look at the transformation (ignore the yellowish look, he took the picture after it got dark, so his phone camera didn’t correct the white balance):

We ripped up the carpeting in the nerd boy’s bedroom and found much of the same (staples, paint splatters and the floor itself was fully painted white) so that one will be a bit more labor intensive to sand everything down, but it’ll be so cool when it’s done. Then we’ll tackle the master bedroom and do the same.

We pulled up a corner of the carpet in the main floor bedroom, and discovered it, too, has it’s original wood floors hiding beneath the crappy carpet. I also have high hopes for the guest room in the basement, since my office/craft room across the way has hardwood floors (instead of the typical basement cement floors) under that carpet. I know this, because the carpet was laid so terribly in here, that when the dogs have scratched the area under my desk to make it more comfortable, they’ve scratched a hole in the carpet, and revealed beautiful hardwood underneath.

I haven’t had a chance to pull up a corner of the carpet in guest room yet, but hope springs eternal that there will be a nice floor under the carpet. I’m not too concerned about if the other basement room (currently being used for storage), since I’ll eventually be converting that room into a wine cellar, so if there are cement floors underneath that carpet, that will work for my wine cellar plans. Even better if there happens to be hardwood under that carpet. So much to do, so little time!

Let’s head on into the funnies, shall we? This cracked me up:

  1. That roundabout (coming soon) is LITERALLY from my nightmares! I’ve dreamed about it! Wow! You had snow? We had 99 degrees today. Ugh! Can’t wait for some fall weather. A Farewell to Arms really made me laugh! Have a great week!

  2. Thanks for the funnies. If i ever win the lotto, i’m going to have to do something similar.

Good luck with all the flooring!
