We made it, people! We’ve managed to squeak through 2020 and arrive in 2021. And honestly, after the day I’ve had today, I really hope this isn’t the case for this year:

So I had planned on knocking out a post immediately after dinner to have it ready to rock’n’roll by 8pm PST, the ‘normal’ time I like to go ‘live’ (since I was scheduling for midnight EST back in the day, I was trying to keep it consistent).

Only best laid plans and all that – I got stuck on a ‘live chat’ with the worst customer service person on the planet who happens to work for UPS. So basically, when I log into my UPS account and go to my shipping history, I should see the two labels I created/printed on Saturday, right?

Except only one is showing up. I suppose I should be happy that the bigger of the two packages – both on their way to my sister in Kansas – is the one that shows up, vs. the smaller of the two (‘smaller’ being relative, as in that box was 16x16x13 or something and 9 lbs, whereas the ‘big’ package was 49x13x14 and 26 lbs, so of course significantly more expensive on the shipping charges).

The problem is that since the one package isn’t showing up in my shipping history inside my UPS account, I don’t have the tracking number to keep an eye on things. I didn’t have a copy emailed to myself, nor did I save a PDF version – I simply printed it straight out on my printer, taped it to the box and called it a day. When my UPS driver came to drop off a couple of packages for me today, I asked him to please take these prepaid packages with him (as I’ve done in the past – saves me a trip to the UPS store, and our driver is super nice).

So like any logical person, I reach out to customer service at UPS – usually I get intelligent empathetic people, but that’s usually by phone, not by live chat. But I just had a quick question – as in, where’s the other label information of the label I purchased 20 minutes earlier than the label showing up in my account so I can keep an eye on the tracking number?

Let me ask you this – is that difficult to understand?

Apparently so for “Conrado T” – he asked for the tracking number of the package in question. I explained again that I don’t have the tracking number, since that particular label is missing in my account. Again I asked why one of the two labels purchased on the same day is not showing in my shipping history?

You know what he replied with?

“I am sorry for that what I can suggest is to go back to where the package was drop off.”

So naturally I got a little snarky with my response, seeing as how we’d already been on the chat for a solid 10 minutes by now. Me asking the same question in different ways, trying to figure out how to ‘dumb it down’ without offending Conrado T. I had already told him twice that the packages were picked up at my house today…which is why I didn’t have the tracking number, because the label was on the package. So my response to him telling me to go back to where it was dropped off:

“So you want me to stand on my front porch and do what??”

Of course I had to follow that with yet another reminder:

“When my regular UPS driver came to make a delivery, I gave him my outgoing packages. What you don’t seem to comprehend is that one of the two tracking numbers shows up like it should in my dashboard/shipping history in my UPS account. BUT ONLY ONE when I bought TWO labels and shipped TWO packages. Why is one of the tracking numbers not showing in my shipping history? It should be there even if it wasn’t picked up, for the simple reason that the label was generated/purchased/paid for.”

You’re going to love his response:

“I am sorry for that we don’t want to provide false information about the package when the label was created the store will generate tracking number for the both package.”

So naturally I had to respond in all caps, because, well, I had to:

“I DIDN’T SHIP IT FROM A STORE, I SHIPPED IT FROM THE COMFORT OF MY OWN HOME USING MY COMPUTER, PURCHASED THE LABEL WITH A CREDIT CARD – TWO LABELS – ONLY ONE IS SHOWING UP IN MY UPS ACCOUNT UNDER MY SHIPPING HISTORY, EVEN THOUGH I PRINTED A LABEL, TAPED IT SECURELY TO THE BOX, AND GAVE IT TO MY UPS DRIVER. WHY IS ONLY ONE SHOWING UP IN MY ACCOUNT AND NOT BOTH?????”

You are not even going to believe his response to that – keep in mind I’m on UPS’s website, logged into my account, have referred to that many times since the beginning of the chat, and this is what he replied to the fact I didn’t ship it from a store:

“I am sorry for that have you check your shipping system?”

I. Can’t. Even. I reiterated the fact that both labels were purchased on the same day through the same account with the same credit card, both packages had their respective labels secured to them, and were handed over to my friendly UPS driver today. Both labels should be showing up in my shipping history, but only one is. And we came back to this:

“Do you have the tracking number that was showing at your end?”

I replied in all caps again, because, well, it felt necessary:

“NO, BECAUSE IT’S MISSING FROM MY SHIPPING HISTORY – IF IT WAS IN MY SHIPPING HISTORY LIKE IT SHOULD BE, LIKE I **EXPECTED** IT TO BE, I WOULD HAVE THE TRACKING NUMBER AND WE WOULDN’T BE HAVING THIS FRUSTRATING CONVERSATION. DUH!”

And this is what his response was:

“The UPS tracking numbers are either 11 or 18 digits long, and 18-digit tracking numbers begin with ‘1Z’. Kindly double check.”

Un-freaking-believable. So yeah, I shouted back again:

“OMG!!!!!! YOU STILL DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHAT I’M TRYING TO FIND OUT! I DO NOT HAVE THE FREAKING TRACKING NUMBER BECAUSE IT IS NOT SHOWING UP IN MY SHIPPING ACCOUNT.”

He finally asked for my UPS account number, which I gave him, then he replied:

“One moment let me pull up the account”

I waited patiently (OK, full disclosure, not so patiently – I decided to call the 800 number while waiting because I was curious to see if, now that it had been over 40 minutes of back and forth getting nowhere, if I’d have better luck with someone on the phone). But while I was waiting to be connected to a customer service person on the phone, Conrado T ended the live chat.

Poof.

So that was my excitement for the evening! Next time I decide to ship through UPS, I’ll be sure to save the label in PDF format before printing out a physical label because apparently the tracking number is the golden ticket. Or something like that.

Anyway – shall we move on to the funnies? We need them for sure! This is absolutely hilarious – hopefully it shows up for you correctly:

  1. So-called customer service is frustrating! First, so many are difficult to understand. Second, they absolutely don’t listen! And when they say it’s a live chat, I always highly doubt it. Is anyone really that stupid? A bot, maybe. Love the redneck sushi!

    1. AMEN my friend! Customer service has become very frustrating – and between the bots and the non-English speaking reps, beyond frustrating. All good, though – packages both arrived safe and sound to my sister’s house on Friday! Woot!! 😀

  2. I recognize one of those memes! 😉

I did my first RTT in what, five years today? IT FELT GOOD. I miss this feeling of family we have doing this wholesome random roundup. I had shipping issues a few months ago. Tracked a package FOREVER that wasn’t moving. FINALLY got the package two months late and the pants I couldn’t wait to wear were about six inches too short. Apparently thin people are also short? I mean, I’m only 5’5 but I later found out it shipped from China so I guess that’s on me for not looking into it further.

    1. Yay! Julie’s in the house!! That feeling of ‘family’ has been kinda missing for a while – I’m so glad you’re here to help reignite it!! Oh lordy – I had the same ‘non moving package’ mode at the beginning of December (to the same sister, mind you, this time through USPS). I think they were waaaaay overloaded this year because everyone was ordering online. I learned the hard way that ordering something from China in the form of clothing sizes are waaaaay off – I ordered some skirts a few years back, and they arrived looking like they might fit a kid vs. an adult… and apparently that’s the issue many have, as us Americans are sized much bigger than Asians. I wish I was petite like they tend to be! 😀

  3. Ugh! You need someone on the phone who speaks English as a first language when it’s something even the least bit complicated, and i will bet people who speak other languages need the same, someone who instinctively understands what you are talking about.

Here’s my weird, i-know-nothing-about-computers idea. Do you keep your browser history? If so, could you go back to that day and find the page in your browser history from which you printed the two labels? That page might have the numbers, just a crazy idea from someone whose idea of how to save stuff on my computer is to email it to myself.

Loved the funnies, especially the redneck sushi.

    1. I agree, Mimi – I even asked at one point if I could be transferred to someone who spoke English… he asked for the tracking number again, said he needed that before transferring me, as they’d be asking for it, anyway… ::facepalm:: Thanks for the idea, by the way – I did search my history, but unfortunately it was ‘updated’ from me trying to find where in the world the tracking numbers were in my UPS account… it’s all good, though – the packages both arrived safe and sound at my sister’s house on Friday! 😀

    1. I agree, John – I wondered that as well. Although, I did interact with a bonafide ‘bot’ in the beginning of the chat session, until said bot wasn’t able to help me and supposedly transferred me to a human CS rep… I suspect it was a person, just someone without English as a first language. 😉 It’s all good, though – both packages arrived at my sister’s house safe and sound on Friday! 😀

  4. This is my first RTT since 2016! Can’t believe I’ve been gone so long, Stacy your story is crazy! I HOPE that both packages are on the SAME tracking number. Also, your memes are ON POINT! Love every one of them. Cheers to a New Year and hoping for better customer service!

    1. WooHoo!! Welcome back to RTT, Rachel! So nice to have you back! 🙂 Both packages were not on the same tracking number, but GOOD NEWS – they both arrived safe and sound at my sister’s house on Friday. Woot! Cheers to a New Year to you too – and better customer service all around! 😀

BTW Rachel – I went over to your blog to read and comment… reading worked, but I can’t find anywhere at all to post a comment. Do you accidentally (or on purpose) have commenting turned off, perchance? 🙂
