August has arrived – how’d that happen so quickly??

It’s weird to see people posting that their kids are starting school this week – we had that scenario when we lived in Pennsylvania, but at least they waited until the third week of August, not the first week. Growing up, school always started for us kids right after Labor Day – it was nice thinking of Labor Day weekend as the ‘last hurrah’ of summer, whereas school ended shortly after Memorial Day, so it was sort of the kick-off to summer.

At least here in the Pacific Northwest they still do the ‘after Labor Day’ start to school, so the kids are happy they still have four weeks from Wednesday before the first day of school happens for them.

The other difference, of course, is that when I was in school, we didn’t have a bajillion days off during the school year… we had the typical holidays and a week for Christmas break, and a week for Spring break, but nothing like how it is now with those same breaks plus a ton of early dismissals and teacher in-service days.

So while they get to wait until after Labor Day to start, their last day of school isn’t until the end of the second week of June – and only if they don’t have snow make-up days to, well, make-up. We only had a couple of snow days last year, so they were able to make up those days during the school year (on frivolous ‘no school’ days that weren’t necessary, but were useful to not extend the school year farther into the summer).

I’m so glad I have the privilege of working from home with mega flexible hours – there’s no way I could manage the kind of job I used to have in Corporate America with the 8-5 schedule (which means at least 7-6 or a longer stretch, depending on commute and traffic). Though the one thing I do miss is socializing with the work family, and actually getting out of the house to ‘escape’ mom duties for a block of hours during the day to be me as me and not as ‘mom’. Know what I mean?

Maybe I should build a She-Shed in the backyard and make it my office, just to have some separation, hmmmm? But that wouldn’t solve the missing work family socialization. I’ll have to ponder some options on that one!

You remember the whole series of commercials about Sheryl’s She-Shed? I saw this the other day:

That cracked me up! I might have to use that as inspiration when building my She-Shed. We’ll see.

Back to how fast this summer is going, this cracked me up:

It’s so true! I better keep an eye out for any fall decor – fall is my favorite season, so I love to decorate, but if I want to add to my decor, I need to be vigilant for when it’s actually in the stores, because it’ll be one of those deals “now you see it, now you don’t” super fast. So give out a shout if you see something cool in your neck of the woods (and what store) so I can see if we have it here locally, too.

This is genius:

This cracked me up:

As did this:

Love that this looks like a reaaaalllly long cow:

Hilarious dog funnies:

This is an amazing shot of a Praying Mantis:

I had no idea they could flare up like that!

This is hilarious:

There are no words:

Definitely groan-worthy:

This cracked me up:

And I’m just going to leave this right here for you:

That’s a wrap for this week – you know the drill, link up and join in the , everyone is welcome.

  1. That SheShed is fabulous, i think i would enjoy one of those, too.

Great funnies, i can imagine my cats would want me to put down the camera and stop laughing, too.

Hope you have a great week!

  2. I don’t know how I made it work with 3 kids and both my husband and I working typical 8-5 jobs. (Granted, he adjusted his hours to account for times I had to be gone.) Now that I will (at least for fall) be home T/R and only gone from about 11-5 on MWF, I am really happy that I can fill in those gaps with the kids and their schedules!
