Hello, Monday! Looks like the winter weather is finally on its way out – while chilly, we’ve had sunshine for a few consecutive days, so maybe we’re finally moving towards spring!

Being that it’s Monday, Monday means music! For the month of March, our Spotlight Dancer is our very own bloggy buddy Patrick Weseman of Adventures in Weseland! He has chosen the theme for this week, and since March is “Music in Our Schools” month, his choice is “how music educates us”. Let’s get this party started!

Remember the kids you once played tag with on the elementary school playground? It was a time when school was the center of your small universe. And making friends was your biggest priority. This delightful alternative rock song from 2001 describes childhood schoolmates as they embark upon a new school year of experiences together.

Here’s Whitestripes with “We’re Going To Be Friends”:

Next up, this 2014 pop song describes a smart high school girl who is headed for Harvard. She’s a straight-A student who has her parents convinced that she’s spending all of her time with her nose buried in the books. However, she acknowledges that good girls are bad girls who haven’t been caught.

Here’s one of Princess Nagger’s favorite groups, 5 Seconds of Summer, with “Good Girls”:

Next up, the narrator in this 2008 country song describes life as a 15 year-old high school freshman. It provides perspective about false promises, changing priorities, and the process of discovering who one is.

All of this identity-searching happens during those four glorious (and sometimes terrible) years in high school. I’m so glad to be an adult!

Give a listen to Taylor Swift with “Fifteen”:

Last, but certainly not least, is a brand new song from this favorite group that just premiered on Friday. It fits perfectly with today’s theme, as it is educational.

Boy band scholars of the world, Donnie Wahlberg, Danny Wood, Jonathan Knight, Joey McIntyre, and Jordan Knight have a pop history lesson for you. New Kids on the Block’s music video for “Boys In The Band” referenced iconic boy bands from the 1970s to modern day, and gave boy band fans everywhere, and helped demonstrate why fans everywhere have loved the “boys in the band” for decades.

The group’s newest single — which is part of the 30th anniversary re-release of their iconic album, Hangin’ Tough — pays homage to all of the boy bands that came before and after them, and they recruited some of their tour mates. Not only that, the song also honors Naughty By Nature and Debbie Gibson, who sings the song’s hook and plays a sexy school teacher in the video.

In just four minutes and fifteen seconds, the New Kids on the Block manage to educate viewers everywhere on the history of boy bands, from their inception to their current K-Pop superstardom, with plenty of references packed in every second. It’s truly a boy band fan’s dream come true.

Without further ado, here’s New Kids On The Block with “Boys In The Band (Boy Band Anthem):

  1. Taylor Swift has a gift for connecting with a younger audience and expressing feelings of a teen. While she is not my favorite artist, there is no denying her talent to pen a lyric.

  2. Stacy,

You never fail to entertain me with your mewsic selections. My favorite today has to be New Kids on the Block with ‘Boys in the Band’. That was a lot of fun! Thanks for sharing the dance floor. Here’s to another boogietastic week, my friend! 😉

  3. Interesting choices! Speaking of boy bands I hear Jonas Bros just released a new CD. Unfortunately, I didn’t know the theme had been changed when I did mine.

  4. My favorite was also the Boys in the Band song – it was pretty catchy, besides being educational. Yes, many kinds of education out there, and your blog always educates me in some way since your song choices are usually new to me.
