Hello my awesome random peeps! So glad you honor me with your participation, even when I’m so easily distracted by shiny objects and visit sporadically. It’s a new month already! May Day – when I was a kid, we used to make conical vases with construction paper and ribbon, then fill them with fresh flowers from our flower beds (I’m pretty sure my mom gave us permission) then go hang them on our neighbors front door, ring the bell and run away – but hide nearby so we could watch their happy faces with the surprise May Day flowers.

Something like this:

Seems May Day has changed over the years, though – now it’s International Worker’s Day instead, though I think some European countries still do the May Day celebrations (dancing around the maypole and whatnot). I’m pretty sure the flowers to the neighbors fun was passed down from my Swedish great-grandmother, she loved all the old Scandinavian traditions I still love to reminisce about as well as practice with my kids.

Riffraff update – there’s been a mass exodus over the past week or so, so it appears that they are truly on their way out. The owner of the house and property gave them eviction notices (especially since the main renter didn’t have permission to sublet all the rooms and outbuildings). I kind of feel sorry for the owner, though – the riffraff did a number on the outbuilding that no one was supposed to be living in (no working toilet, no running water) as the side door is completely missing (so it’s wide open to the elements and wildlife), and the stained glass window has multiple broken panes. So sad when people simply don’t respect property that’s been around almost 100 years.

You’ll be happy to know that the animal droppings found in our yard turns out not to be bear poop – that’s a relief, actually. It’s deer poop – apparently their droppings have a different shape during the spring months, since they’re feasting on new young grass and foliage. We do see deer roaming about quite often, and I’d much prefer they be wandering through our yard vs. a bear.

I will have to figure out how to keep them from eating my grape vines when I plant those, though – we’re mapping out where I’ll be planting my mini vineyard like I did in our back 40 in Pennsylvania. Since our property is sloped, the grapes are going to flourish much better, since they’ll have better drainage (the back 40 in PA tended to flood during the rainy season). It’ll be great to have grapes at my fingertips for winemaking vs. having to order them online all the time. Of course I’ll still have to order online, too, because I’m not going to have the volume of grapes I’ll ultimately need, but growing grapes will add an extra element of fun.

Speaking of wine, check out this re-purposed piano someone turned into wine storage:

I thought that was super cool, but the $3000 price tag is a little rich for my blood. Plus, if I see someone giving away a piano for free, I might contemplate making one myself…heh!

I saw this on Facebook this week and it cracked me up:

I’m going to give the poster the benefit of the doubt and assume it was a joke for a kitchen hack.

If anyone was a Starsky and Hutch fan like I was (big time!) you might feel a tad bit old seeing a recent picture of Starsky, Hutch and Huggy Bear:

I’m sorry!

Here, this will crack you up:

As will this:

I thought this was pretty clever:

And finally, I’m going to leave this right here for you:

Get it?!

That’s a wrap for this week – you know the drill, link up and join in the fun, everyone is welcome, random or not. And that means even if you don’t have a specific Random Tuesday Thoughts Rebel post posted, you can still link up, I’m not picky. You don’t even have to add the badge, just link up so I can come harass you on your blog. I promise to play nice.

  1. I love that piano turned bar! Can’t afford it, either, but it’s cool! And thanks for making me feel old with Starsky and Hutch! (JK) Love the otters! Have a great week!

  2. Surprising the neighbors with flowers is such a lovely thing to do! That’s a great tradition!

Since I am an artist, I was thinking of drawing a nice, small picture for someone and leaving it in my gym locker for the next person to find. The flower thing is a similar concept. I really should do it. I got the idea because someone taped a scrap piece of paper on the inside of the locker I use that reads, “credit card.” It must’ve been some sort of reminder, but it has been there for several years now. lol!

Starsky and Hutch! I would never guess that was David Soul even if I had a conversation with him. The other two are still recognizable.

So now I know what deer poop AND bear poop look like. lol! The deer poop looks much more interesting. I like your little factoid about it, too.

That’s funny about the water. I keep bottles of water in the freezer in case we have a major earthquake. If the refrigerator is tossed around we can just thaw out the water to drink when we need it. My family laughs, but they don’t remove it.

  3. Stacy,

I’m a day late to the party and for that I’m sorry! I recall as a kid our school always had May Day. Dancing around the flagpole was part of the ceremony, too. I’m not sure if we did the paper cone but there were plenty of paper flowers to decorate the flagpole. I like your family tradition, though. How fun!!

I do remember the 70s show Starsky and Hutch. I don’t recall being a huge fan but I did watch on occasions. We’re all getting older. It’s better than the alternative, right. Unfortunately, some age with grace and others not so much. It makes you wonder what happened in a person’s life. Obviously, the first thing with David Soul is the weight gain. That really changes a person appearance completely and in some cases making a person nearly unrecognizable. I’ve met classmates who fall into this category and sadly even after they tell me who they are my brain can’t make the connection. That could be more of distance and time issue, though. You know when you’re not around someone for 20, 30, 40 years then your brain fails to recollect properly unless you were super close friends and then the light goes on.

That is sad how little respect people have for other people’s property. The real kicker is these same people would not want their stuff trashed. What happened to living by the golden rule? I hope your neighbor problem vanishes soon, though.

Thanks for hosting the random fun, dear friend. Have a good week!!
