Last day of March? Man, I really need to stop blinking. Time flies when you’re having fun – and even when it’s not so much fun. You know, like last week turning out to be a bust and all.

So we have Xfinity for our internet and phone (we cut the cable chord a while back because we’re rebels like that, and seriously don’t like the politics with cable being subjective to draining bank accounts as the fees constantly go up annually, if not monthly.

I know, right?

At any rate, back in December Xfinity called to let us know we were eligible for a free upgrade to a faster modem (which is a no-brainer, since we’re paying extra for ultra fast internet anyway – another one of those ‘add on’ fees). We followed the steps to order the new modem and waited.

And waited…

And waited…

Nothing.

So when our monthly bill went up significantly because we’d hit the one year mark from the new ordered service, when I called to find out what the heck was going on, I also mentioned the wayward modem and how we’re still subjected to slow connection speed compared to what we were paying for.

The non-English speaking dude told me we had to go to the local Xfinity store and do a trade in ourselves, because we opted for a ‘self-install’ for our initial hook up. But that’s not what the computer phone call said, nor any info on our account online, either.

So I decided, rather than try to get a non-English speaking person to understand what I was trying to convey, I did an online chat. So thankful for online chats.

This time I was reassured that we didn’t need to disconnect ourselves and drive to a local location to do a trade-in, they’d ship, for free, an upgraded modem with instructions on sending the old one back.

Miracle of miracles, we received the new modem in a matter of days. I unpacked it and wondered what was so different, because it was the exact same modem, the exact same software version as our old one. But hey, who am I to question them, right?

I went ahead and unhooked everything and everyone, re-hooked things up and activated the ‘new’ modem… and ended up with a connection that was even slower than the old one.

D’Oh!

So then I thought maybe, just maybe it was time to do a ‘refresh’ on my computer to make it run faster – you know, because surely it had to play a part, right?

Only when Microsoft says ‘refresh’ simply ‘cleans up’ your computer without losing apps and documents, whereas ‘restore’ takes away everything returning your computer to it’s original factory setting, is not so. Yes, ‘restore’ is as they say, but ‘refresh’ is not.

‘Refresh’ does keep your documents and files intact – but in a ‘Windows.old’ folder, not where they were before (this discovery was made after hours and hours of searching in vain everywhere else). And it wipes out any and all apps and programs installed, forcing you to re-install everything.

Shortcuts to documents and apps you use regularly? Gone.

Needless to say I spent the next several days trying to reinstate all my stuff. Most are reinstated, but I’m still searching for others. Too bad there’s not an automatic ‘lost-and-found’ folder implemented when you do a refresh or restore.

So long story even longer, the internet connection was sporatic at best, especially with all the wireless devices in the house. So it was time to subject myself to yet another call to Xfinity to get it straightened out.

Sure enough they’d sent the wrong equipment and had to do another order to get us the correct modem (and made it seem as though they’re being extra generous waiving the shipping fee, when hello?!  they were they ones that messed up the first one to begin with).

Late Friday we finally got the correct (and faster) modem, so I stayed up late getting everything switched out and everyone’s devices hooked up. I do notice an improvement, though it doesn’t measure up to the hype, but I’ll take it.

And hope that I’ll find everything I lost in the ‘refresh’ at some point, but at least I’m limping along at a much faster pace than I was last week…heh.

The next three weeks, however, I’m going to be a bit on the sporadic side, so please bear with me. This week it’s the kids’ Spring Break, the hubby has his Spring Break the following two weeks – so I will essentially be in interruptus mode for three weeks straight.

I’m actually looking forward to some quality time with the kids this week, as well as the hubby and I have some fun plans together when the kids are in school the following two weeks. Fun is afoot!

It’s time once again for Rory Bore’s Tuesday Chat!

This week’s prompt or question is:

Rebel Without A Cause. Are you a Rebel, or a by-the-book kinda person?

Rebel

Yep, that’s me. I do tend to follow the book (or toe the line, whatever) when necessary (I don’t look good in orange, even if it is the new black), but for the most part, I like to consider myself a rebel.

After all, there’s a reason Princess Nagger marches to the beat of her own drum, I do, too. And so does the hubby. So she was doomed to be a rebel herself. Which is biting me in the ass now that she’s fast approaching teendom.

Funny (though fairly tame) story example of my rebel mode – you know how you either have to be 18 (or have a parent sign off) in order to get pierced ears? Yeah, well I got my ears pierced two weeks before my 18th birthday.

Big deal, only two weeks – but since I’m not prone to lying, it was a big deal (to me) going into the jewelry store to get my ears pierced (I’m surprised they didn’t ask for I.D. when I said it was my 18th birthday that day). My parents were anti-piercing because of Biblical verses, but I wanted to wear cool  earrings.

And I thought I’d been quite clever hiding my pierced ears from my parents with my long hair, only to find out my mom noticed and never said anything.

Moms notice and know everything.

So what about you – are you a Rebel, or a by-the-book kinda person?

That’s a wrap for this week – you know the drill, link up and join in the fun, everyone is welcome, random or not. And that means even if you don’t have a specific Random Tuesday Thoughts Rebel post posted, you can still link up, I’m not picky. You don’t even have to add the badge, just link up so I can come harass you on your blog. I promise to play nice.

  2. Oh technology is a right cranky b*tch!! it’s only good when it’s working in my opinion.
you can probably tell I have a love/hate relationship with it. 🙂

I already had my ears pierced, but I did sneak into a Rated R movie just shy of my 18th birthday. I remember it was Stephen King’s Pet Sematary. And the funniest part was that I had used my of age friend Dana’s ID to gain entrance. And….. Dana was a boy. They never even noticed. LOL

  3. Oh come on now… I’ve been a Rebel all my life. I follow no one, but me and what my peers have taught me! I never started a fight… meaning I never threw the first punch unless I was protecting myself. Well, hope you have goodtimes with hubby & kiddies this week! Take pics… now to take the dog for a walk!!! It’s wonderful outside.
