Last full week of freedom for the kids…er, um, I mean summer break! Little Dude is super excited about starting first grade next week, Princess Nagger is less excited about starting 6th grade. I’m pretty sure that in her tween mind she’s ‘over it’.

We’re going to make the most of this final week of summer for sure. Meanwhile, it’s Monday, and what better way to kick off the final week of summer than with fun music. This week’s them is: “Songs that make you happy, and if there’s a specific reason, let us know!”

Let’s start off with a mash-up that would make anyone happy, just by its sheer genius. You know what a mash-up is, right? It’s when someone combines two completely different songs into one. This one totally works.

Lyrics from a popular 1987 hit song gets mashed up with a more current song by a talented artist. The resulting music video, which also incorporates some Chumbawamba, is surprisingly smooth and easy on the ears.

AviciiAstley

Give a listen to Rick Astley‘s famous Rickroll song “Never Gonna Give You Up”  mashed up with Avicii‘s hit “Wake Me Up”, featuring Chumbawamba – I present to you “Never Gonna Wake You Up”:

Next up is a great song from one of my… no, strike that, not ‘one of’,  but the favorite artist. Today is a big deal, since his new CD finally becomes available today. Those of you who know who my favorite artist is will also know that he’s been hilarious about leaking songs and videos from today’s new album over the past month. This song is no different, where he recruited none other than the Annoying Orange to help out with the lyric video.

In case you’ve been living under a rock and don’t know who the Annoying Orange is, I’m a tad jealous of your naïveté. Those of you with young-ish children will have had some exposure to the annoyance that is the Annoying Orange. At least in this particular video, he doesn’t seem quite as annoying as usual. Although that may be in part because of the presence of my favorite artist. We’ll never know.

The artist is playing “Strange Lime Wearing a Cowboy Hat”, which inspires the Annoying Orange and his gang of talking fruit to all put on cowboy hats and enjoy the song. The lime character is even sporting a mustache and soul patch, wearing the artist’s trademark white hat and playing a red guitar. The artist provided the voiceover for the lime, who laments to the Annoying Orange that all of the limes in the kitchen are getting thrown in the blender.

That of course leads to a lime-led performance of the fun track, which features the tag line “When life gives you limes, you make margaritas”. I love it. So far I’ve loved all the leaked songs on this new album, and can’t wait to get my pre-ordered copy.

BradPaisley

Yep, you guessed it, Brad Paisley is my all-time favorite artist! And here he is as a lime:

Without further ado, here’s Brad Paisley and the Annoying Orange with “Limes”:

Next up is another song from that same new album – this time Brad leaked it via Ellen DeGeneres, with a two-part tweet that read:

So ladies,my favorite song on this album is about my belief that the sky’s the limit for you. But I don’t want to be the one to present it..

I’ll let someone else share this song with the world,Someone who helped inspire it. And @theellenshow -you truly inspire me. #shatteredglass

That absolutely made me happy. The song is phenomenal, with powerful lines like “Bust that ceiling out / The sky’s the limit now / Time to make up for the past / Rear your head back and roar / Like you ain’t ever done before,” word has it that DeGeneres knew as soon as she heard the song that she wanted to help the singer in sharing it with the world.

Here’s my boy Brad Paisley with “Shattered Glass”:

Next up is a fun new song from another favorite artist – sure to make you happy, especially since the artist brings sass to this song – a wild, cowpunk workout. She stays true to herself with her familiar turbo-twang vocal and tongue-in-cheek delivery, making this song amongst the most adventurous songs she’s ever recorded.

You can tell she obviously has fun with this song.

miranda-lambert-300

Here’s the adorable Miranda Lambert with “Little Red Wagon”:

Last, but certainly not least, is the amazingly talented youngest artist of today’s lineup with his newest single. He also named his upcoming tour the same as this particular single, even though he still hasn’t committed to getting any skin art.

The song is pure fun and musical levity, and though the story is as old as time – you know, boy loves girl so much he wants to tell the world – this artist has updated it with his trademark vibrancy.

The lyrics “Ink it in on my skin, sign me up, make it last against the time / Cause this is more than a picture that fades of a first date Friday night”  prove that he’s going to do more than just shout it from the rooftops for the girl he loves. “It’s unerasable, unmistakable, hey, everybody wants to know / Now I think I know, I’ll wear it on my sleeve, I gotta let it show / Making a promise that I never wanna let you go.”

“Your name, your name sounds so good next to mine, just saying / And I think, I think I’m gonna put it in all my rhymes, baby / Cause with you, I’m gonna do quite a few things that I never thought I would do / Your name, your name, your name / Would be a good tattoo.”

HunterHayes

Here’s Hunter Hayes with “Tattoo”:

Do you have any tattoos, and if so, do they have special meaning?

What songs make you happy? Have a great Monday!

  1. Another great blog Stacy, Congrats and “no” I don’t have a tattoo. And I think Hunter Hayes is going to regret his if he gets that girls name tattoo on his arm, hahahaha. But it’s a sweet song…young love. But I was so moved by “Shattered Glass” and the young girls in it. I’m surprised I missed that on Ellen. But didn’t Miranda Lambert sing that song…wow. That girl has some serious swagger.

You and the kids enjoy there last few days of freedom and I hope their first day of school is an easy one. Thanks for the wonderful songs and have a great week!

  2. Nice happy tunes selections. I like Brad Paisley’s new song, Shattered Glass. Tattoos? Nope, I don’t have any. I do remember a time when I thought I would like want, though. However, since that time I fell out of love with the idea. There are things about myself I want to change that I can change with hard work, but to add something that becomes apart of me forever. Nope, I can live without one and I’m all the happier for it.

  4. Since a martyr’s death is the dream of a lot of terrorists, I think it would be much better to lock Foley’s killer in a jail cell with the annoying orange for the rest of his days.
