As moms, we tend to make sure our family’s health is well taken care of, and quite often neglect to make sure we’re taking care of ourselves.  I’m so guilty of doing just that.  Have you heard of probiotics? They are live microorganisms that are taken for various health benefits.  Though not evaluated by the FDA, probiotics have been growing in popularity.

Bacteria isn’t always bad.  Good bacteria is a vital part of our immune system and helps us digest food and absorb nutrients. There’s a natural balance of “good” and “bad” bacteria in our bodies, but sometimes that balance can be thrown off by things like antibiotics, hormones levels, diet, etc.

When my gall bladder went bad and I had to have it removed a few years ago, I was worried because while it’s not technically a vital  organ, it does help in the digestive process.  Without the function a gall bladder provides, I did notice a shift in my digestive process.

A good probiotic can be a huge help in offsetting various kinds of digestive issues – Provella Probiotics Dietary Supplement is specially designed just for women and includes six strains chosen with our health in mind:

Provella

They contain Lactobacillus acidolphilus, Lactobacillus fermentum, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus reuteri, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, and Bifobacterium bifidum.  I know what’s going through your head right now is “Blah, blah blah!”

While I’m clueless on how to pronounce that list of ingredients, I have been a fan of probiotics for a while and know how important they are for immune system health.  I was happy to try out Provella to see how it works for me.

I really like how this one is designed specifically with us women in mind, since we are truly unique (and complicated).  I also like that they include more than the typical acidophilus that most brands use – while it’s a vital part (I used to buy acidophilus milk all the time), the other ingredients also play an important part, too.

I also like that they can be taken with our without food – I tend to be sporadic when taking my daily vitamins, and if I have to take anything else, I don’t like getting an upset stomach.  These had no effect whatsoever on my tummy – which made me very happy.  They’re also a reasonable size (for those of you who have trouble swallowing pills), unlike my daily vitamin I jokingly refer to as a horse pill:

My aunt has been on my case about my needing to take some sort of probiotic, so she’ll be happy to hear that I am now, thanks to Provella.  I know the benefits are long-term, not a ‘quick fix’, and I’ve only been taking it for about a week so I haven’t noticed any drastic change, but I’m betting that’s a good thing.  If there were drastic changes – adverse or otherwise – I’d be worried.  So I’m taking them worry-free!

  1. Dear Stacy,

A very informative post especially for readers who haven’t used probiotics before.

I had an Asyra Pro allergy test last year and I’ve been recommended to take probiotics with MSM powder and vit C, among other supplements. It did boost my immune system which was especially handy in winter. I didn’t get sick at all while everyone else came down with a flu or cold.

I’ll check if Provella’s available in the UK for me to try. BioKult was also good.

    🙂
