The plague hit our house last week by way of a double whammy sinus infection and the flu bug.  Of course the only one who was hit with this malady was yours truly.  Lucky me.  I’m sure the roller-coaster weather we keep having certainly didn’t help any – freezing cold one day, warm the next, followed by freezing the next.  Mother Nature has not been my friend at all this winter.

As a mom, I don’t get sick days – I have to muster up and power through the yucks as best I can and still take care of the little people, and try to take care of myself as well.  It’s not easy, that’s for sure.

When you feel like death warmed over the last thing you feel like doing is whipping up a gourmet (or not-so-gourmet) meal for the tribe and try to stay upright while doing so.  Forget about the house being clean or picked up, and laundry was a slow and laborious process to say the least.

But I survived, with a little help from my friends:

Nyquil

Vicks NyQuil to the rescue.  We’ve all heard the commercial, that it’s “the nighttime sniffling, sneezing, coughing, aching stuffy head, fever so you can rest medicine.”  It’s definitely what works for me.

I’ve tried other remedies – both over the counter and home grown – but I keep coming back to Vicks NyQuil when I want to feel human enough to function, or get that all-important sleep at night when the body aches and congestion try to rudely interrupt the restfulness.

NyquilSleep2

Vicks NyQuil not only lets me get a good night’s sleep, but I do not feel spaced out and drowsy the next day, which is very important to me.  It sure helped me last week when I had trouble sleeping, while feeling like I’d been hit by a Mac truck.

I have to confess – I am not a fan of the original, you know the green version.  But they have two new flavors that help make me feel better so much easier – a Soothing Cherry Flavor and Vanilla Cherry Swirl.  Both of those I don’t feel like I have to be the child resisting taking her medicine.  Ahem.

But what about the daytime hours?  You certainly can’t be swigging NyQuil and maintain your mental status to take care of your little peeps, right?  That’s where DayQuil comes into play.

DayQuil2

DayQuil allows me to stay alert during the day without the odd side effects I get from other remedies.  No one wants to walk around in a major fog, where all sounds seem to be coming from a surreal distance, or have a tingly itchy scalp some cold and flu remedies tend to do to me.

The time-tested formula of Vicks DayQuil Cold & Flu Relief can provide non-drowsy symptom relief for those suffering from a cough, cold or flu. The active ingredients in the formula work to suppress the impulse to cough, help clear nasal congestion for easier breathing, help relieve minor aches and pains, and reduce a fever.

In other words, it helps you feel human so you can go about your day with some semblance of normalcy.

I love knowing that Vicks is the #1 pharmacist recommended brand for adult cough/cold/flu relief – I always stock up when it’s cold and flu season.  Just remember when taking any meditation to always check with your doctor and follow the proper recommended course of treatment.  I keep it out of reach of the kids, because it’s not recommended for children under 12.

What are your go-to remedies when you get hit with a cold or flu?
