Night-Owls vs. Morning People

Hard to believe summer is coming to an end.  Princess Nagger starts school in 1-1/2 weeks – she’s simultaneously looking forward to it and dreading it.  At least she’s very happy with the teacher she was assigned for fourth grade – according to her, the teacher she’s getting is “the nicest teacher in the whole school”.  Which means it won’t be as difficult getting her to wake up and get ready for school on time.  Mostly.

Princess Nagger is definitely not a morning person – in fact, when I was pregnant with her, she’d start to get really active rolling and kicking just when I was settling down to go to sleep.  I predicted to the hubby that she was going to be a night-owl, and I wasn’t wrong.  This summer we pretty much didn’t have a set bedtime for her, so she’d stay up with us until midnight, then sleep in until 11 the next day.  I know, right?

Needless to say, a set bedtime has been reactivated under protest – but I know if she doesn’t get to bed earlier and get up earlier, she’s going to be a force to be reckoned with come the first day of school.  And we don’t want her doing this in class:

Which brings me to this week’s question:

Are you or your kids night-owls and late sleepers like Princess Nagger, or morning people like me?

Have a great weekend.

Happy Aloha Friday!

About Stacy (the Random Cool Chick)

After 20+ years in the Corporate World and years of infertility, Princess Nagger made her miraculous appearance and I chose to become a SAHM and WAHM - I love every minute of it. We added Little Dude through adoption, adding a whole new dimension to our family. We have an eclectic mix of pets: dogs, cats, birds and fish. I love to cook and try new techniques to turn ordinary into extraordinary. Crafty by nature, I take on a lot of unique projects and enjoy seeing the end result. My favorite, of course, is making my own wine out of fruits and grapes. Experiments with water currently underway. I blog about the joys of parenting, family, friends, life, love and anything else that strikes my fancy. I do enjoy doing reviews and giveaways for products I use, believe in and can stand behind.

  1. OMG Let me turn back the hands of time. I think my kids were all hard to get out of bed in the morning. Any morning for that matter. Staying up late? Well, that one I really cannot remember. I do believe they were nightowls. Hence… NightOwlmama LOL… She hasn’t changed much! LOL, but she’s definitely a nightowl and so are my grandsons! Not my granddaughter so much, but those boys!!! OH MY GOODNESS! Have a great weekend to you & yours!

  2. I wake up every morning at 2 to 3 AM!!! And stay up…ha! I get lots done before dawn!! So what does that make me…???? I guess an early morning night owl. Ha Ha!!!

  3. It’s been many years that I had to deal with this, but when my boys were young they did not want to get up in the morning to get ready for school. However, that has changed now that they are older (28 & 26).

  4. Sprite is definitely a night owl. She will go as long as she can before succumbing to sleep. We were letting her fall asleep in our bed every night, but reinstated the proper bedtime last week since she started school this week. 🙂

  5. Night owls, every last one of them. It used to drive us crazy, until we realized that, during the summer at least, we had it made – we sleep all night, and they sleep all day. It’s a perfect arrangement.

  6. I am definitely a morning person. Both of my kids used to be but since my older daughter hit her teens, she has become more of a night owl. She usually stays up later than I do. My husband is a night owl too. He can’t stand to get up in the morning.

  7. I would say we are all morning people, my ‘kids’ now in their twenties, went through the normal teenage night owl stage but now they get up in the morning and they never gave me trouble when they were young.

  8. I’m glad she got a teacher she likes. That will hopefully make the mornings a little more bearable.

And Leo is a morning dude if he wakes up. But if we have to wake him up it’s a whole other thing. Unfortunately/fortunately he wakes himself up around 6:30 every morning. Oy!

  9. Haha. The kids stayed up til midnight with us/me during the summer too.
I think dh was all for them going to bed. I tried to remind him about his summer as a child.

But I think these kids are morning people, bearing in mind that the ONLY time they jump out of bed all ready to go is on WEEKENDS! and holidays 🙂

So I think they are a hang between.
    I’m a nightowl and a morning person.

My son started this morning, so about a week before, I kept bumping up bedtime to 8pm. So he could get enough sleep for the brain.
It’s just today though, so welcome to the weekend. Don’t understand why they didn’t begin on Monday.

Good luck with you and the princess!

  10. If I let them, both Turbo and Bruiser would be night owls.

I am an unwilling morning person–if I didn’t get up, no one would.

We will be re-instituting a bedtime when we get back from our trip. Turbo doesn’t go back to school until after Labor Day, but he needs to get back in practice for the getting up routine.

  11. I don’t have kids yet but I will answer for myself. I am a total night owl… I live on the east coast but my body sees to work on west coast time. I hope when I have kids they are also night owls like me because I don’t know how I would ever function having to get up early as I cannot go to sleep early…

  12. My kids are mostly sleepers. Not necessarily night owls but difficult to awaken. As for me, I was that annoying person in college who would sing in the dining hall at breakfast!

🙂 Today is my first week at Aloha Friday! So great to “meet” you!

  13. My oldest is a night owl but she has kept herself on a routine all summer because she has a hard time going to sleep. My son is a early riser and is great at getting up early. I only wish I was…LOL

  14. I think at my kid’s ages, aka- freeloading with minimum responsibilities in life, you can be a morning person when you need to be and a night person when you want to be.

  15. I work 12 hr night shifts so I’m definitely a night owl and late sleeper, along with my 18 month old. My 4 y/o daughter drives me nuts because she bounces up at the crack of dawn, even on weekends! She gets this from her dad who is also an early bird. Great post! I found you via the hop and I’m now following. When you can, I’d love a visit at my little place: http://www.thedivvyspot.com. Thanks and have an awesome weekend!

  16. I am definitely a night owl. I wish my son was like your daughter though. He hates sleep period. He could go to sleep at 5am, and he will still get up about 7-8am. He started 6th grade this year, and here lately he has been sleeping in MAYBE an hour longer, lol. Hey I’ll take what I can get 🙂
