There’s an App for that

You know how people always joke “There's an App for that”?  Well, there probably is.  Though I still haven't discovered an app that will clean my house or fold the laundry.

It took a very long time to get my technology-resistant hubby to go for the gusto and get us SmartPhones to replace our efficient DumbPhones.  While we still don't utilize our SmartPhones as much as we could (and as much as most SmartPhone users do), they sure do make a tad bit easier with all the apps you can get for them.

Since we opted not to go with an Apple product, we went with a Samsung Galaxy (Android) instead, so sometimes an app we'll read about that iPhone users are enthusiastic about, we've had to search all over to find a comparable one for our non-Apple phones.

Recently I was introduced to appSmitten– it's a free newsletter that covers the best apps for iPhone, iPad and Android, and hand-selects the best apps and sends recommendations directly to your inbox.  They focus on finding the apps that are worth downloading – the ones that will keep you organized, entertained and productive.

Speaking of productive, I know I've wasted so much precious time searching for just the right app for something specific.  Did you know there are over 1 million apps out there?  Crazy, I know.  Finding the best ones is like finding a needle in a haystack.  does that needle searching for you.  Pretty cool, no?

I don't know about you, but I'm really cautious when downloading any apps – rule of thumb is to pick those that are four stars or higher so you don't have your SmartPhone wig out on you with a bad app.  appSmitten offers bite-sized app recommendations from a trusted source so you don't have to go hunting to find good apps. Not quite cleaning my house or folding my laundry, but I'll take all the help I can get.

I love that you can browse through categories, lists or  or trendsetters – I was having a field day finding and downloading apps I never even knew existed but that I could benefit from.  Which means I'll be utilizing my SmartPhone a lot more than just to play games or use it as an alarm.  Might as well get my money's worth out of it, right?

It can get so overwhelming to try to find an app for something specific, especially when it might come down to eeney-meeney-miney-moe and you still end up not liking the app, or it doesn't do what you thought it would and you end up uninstalling it.  It's not just me, is it?

Personally, I'm looking forward to this time-saving tool to help me wade through them all to find ones that I'll fall in love with, or that Princess Nagger can benefit from on the rare occasion I let her play with my phone.

What are you waiting for?  Go check out appSmitten – I'd love to know what you think of it, too.

But before you go, riddle me this…I mean here's this week's question:

If you have a SmartPhone, do you use it ‘smartly' or lackadaisically like I do? What's your favorite app?

Have a great weekend!

About Stacy (the Random Cool Chick)

After 20+ years in the Corporate World and years of infertility, Princess Nagger made her miraculous appearance and I chose to become a SAHM and WAHM - I love every minute of it. We added Little Dude through adoption, adding a whole new dimension to our family. We have an eclectic mix of pets: dogs, cats, birds and fish. I love to cook and try new techniques to turn ordinary into extraordinary. Crafty by nature, I take on a lot of unique projects and enjoy seeing the end result. My favorite, of course, is making my own wine out of fruits and grapes. Experiments with water currently underway. I blog about the joys of parenting, family, friends, life, love and anything else that strikes my fancy. I do enjoy doing reviews and giveaways for products I use, believe in and can stand behind.

  1. Hi there! yeah your right there’s apps for that. When I started to blog, there are different apps that can help people to make their life easy. I recommend you to have such apps that can fit your personality so that you do not have the difficulties to interact to others.

  2. I just got a HTC wildfire..so that does seem like I got a Smart phone.. my favourite app would be the facebook for HTC so that I can check my FB page/status on the go.

  3. I have an iphone and use the facebook and twitter app the most. One of my favorite apps is the Gas Buddy one. I always use that to check for gas prices before I fill up. Between our two big SUVs and a small car, I think I’m keeping the gas stations in business some days. LOL.

  4. I definitely could use mine better. I forget about all the great apps I have. My favorite is Shopkick, because I earn points by scanning stuff when I’m shopping, and it gives me special discounts and coupons for my favorite stores. I then turn the points in for instant Target gift cards. It’s fun! (i do have a referral link if anyone wants to try it.)

  5. I only use a few apps but would like to start using more.. I use facebook anytime I am bored.. I use Fandango to look up movie times… I play a few games Dropwords and Words with Friends.. I use WhatsApp to text someone out of the country.. I have a few other ones on my phone but never use them such as Scanlife that my sisters said I had to have and Starbucks that I don’t know too much about.

  6. I have a smartphone – a Droid – that I hardly use for anything, even talking because it’s too damn convoluted to bring up the phone portion of the silly thing. I do have a few apps, including ONE game I never play, but the only one I use with any regularity is the GPS. Because I am directionally challenged.

  7. I love my smart phone and my husband is now loving his. I’ve taken up writing my grocery list on my phone. Helps me (and better yet him) stay on track.

PS: the librarians where I work are able to check out iPads. OMG! I am loving this thing. It is ridiculous.

  8. I’m kind of an app junkie. I’ve had an iphone for years now. I just downloaded one last night called “Draw Something”. You play with friends. You pick a picture to draw and they have to guess it. OMG it’s so much fun! See if you have that one! And btw, I SUCK at drawing!!!

  9. Well, I guess I am about the only person on the universe that doesn’t have an app, or even knows what an app is. I use my phone as a phone, and text the Grandchildren now and again. But, that is it for me.

  10. No SmartPhone just yet. Once we do up our plans, I will probably be selective with what I put on my phone. There are some items that I have on my iPod that I would love to get for my phone down the road.

  11. I finally got one, and I probably don’t get as much use out of it as I could. I mainly use it to get on the Internet – with 5 kids, I can’t always be in front of the computer when I want to be!

  12. I don’t have a smartphone. I’m not sure dh will go for one…and if I had one I’d use it lackadaisically like you do 🙂

But yes there is an app for so much stuff!!! At least I love the learning apps I hear about.

    Happy weekend.

  13. There goes the tyranny of choice because of the million apps you can find and download around. Which do you think is the best app so far?

I like this post because I can totally relate!

  14. Do you mind if I quote a few of your articles as long as I provide credit and sources back to your website? My website is in the very same area of interest as yours and my users would really benefit from some of the information you provide here. Please let me know if this alright with you. Thanks!

  15. I don’t think I could live without my iPhone. Right now my favorite app is DrawSomething. I’m totally addicted!

  16. I don’t get too appy. I just love being able to access internet, FB, twitter, email, etc. Oh, and I love games – like Ant Smashers!
