Growing up, our family was 100% dog people.  My dad was anti-cats because my grandpa had a cat that would pee everywhere and shred the drapes.  The cat from Hell, seriously.  So that particular cat soured my dad on all cats of all kinds, and we had a myriad of dogs instead.

After I moved out of my parent’s house I wanted a pet, but my apartment complex didn’t allow dogs.  Not to mention they’re more dependent on us two-leggers for all things, and since I was traveling a lot for my job, a dog was not conducive to my schedule.  So I got a cat instead, since those were allowed (as long as you didn’t let it outside to mess up the greenery).  If I had to travel, leaving tons of food and water and a fresh litter box was all my cat needed, and I had a fun companion.

Fast forward to now, we have both dogs and cats.  On the cat front we have Zelda:

Link (aka Stinky Linky):
and Fuzz-Butt:

I obviously need to take more current pictures, because while Zelda looks exactly the same, Stinky Linky has grown into a big muscle-head, and Fuzz-Butt has grown into a giant fuzzball with the biggest, fluffiest tail of them all (hence the name ‘Fuzz-Butt’).

They all get along with each other famously, though they do have their moments when insisting on annoying each other.  The one thing I’ve always been proud of is not having my apartment or house smell like I have a menagerie of animals.  I’m very picky about smells, since I’m sensitive to smell – and if I smell something horrendous, it annoys me very much.

When it comes to the cat litter boxes, the hubby has taken them on as his responsibility (isn’t that sweet?) so he’s been buying giant bags of ‘no scoop crystals’ for both cat litter boxes.  We have one litter box in the Summer House for Link and Fuzz-Butt, and one litter box in the main house for the queen herself, Zelda.  You wouldn’t think this beauty would be so stinky when she uses her litter box:

I’m here to tell you that she is.  Very stinky.  I’m not sure if it’s that she doesn’t like the feel of the crystals on her delicate paws, but for some reason when she uses her litter box, she fails to cover up the evidence.

Since our bedroom is at the end of the upstairs hall where her litter box happens to be, if she does her business in the middle of the night, I’ll wake up from the rancid smell and have to go take care of it immediately.  Not so much fun having sleep interrupted by a stinky cat.

ARM & HAMMER® Ultra Last™ Clumping Cat Litter to the rescue:

Here’s the description:

  • ARM & HAMMER® Ultra Last™ Clumping Cat Litter creates rock solid clumps, allowing cat owners to easily remove the source of odors.
  • Moisture activated fresh scent helps deodorize each time your cat uses the litter box.
  • Among ARM & HAMMER® cat litter products available, ARM & HAMMER® Ultra Last™ provides the longest lasting odor control that will keep your home Fresh All Day™.

Did it work?  Absolutely.  Not only did it do what it claims it does, but Zelda actually covers her tracks in the litter box now.  So I guess you can say it’s been “Zelda Approved”.  No more midnight scooping of the litter box so I can get rid of the nasty smell that won’t let me sleep.

We also don’t have the moments of the horrid smell wafting down the stairs announcing that Zelda had just used her litter box (which was extra annoying when that took place during dinner time).  That makes me happy.  And the hubby’s happy since I don’t have to nag him to clean out the litter box as often as he had to before.

If you’re a cat person, what kind of litter do you use and how often do you clean the litter box?

I’m linking up for Wordful Wednesday, because I suck and haven’t taken any recent pictures to share, so I’m killing two birds with one stone.  Forgive me.

  1. I love the little pussy cat colored white. It is cute, and looks like lonely finding for her mother. Taking care of animals is what I love to do most although I have asthma. Either of my parents hates animals that‘s why I did not have the chance to take good care of any pets at home. You are lucky to have lovely cats with you Stacy!

  2. Awwww…what beautiful cats! We had two cats, Grace and Scully, but we had to find new homes for them when we moved. Everyone suffers from horrible allergies in this house. Now, we have one dog, Lucy and she’s almost like a cat, minus the litter box. She never barks and she’s a big furball.

  3. NOT a cat person, I’m afraid, since I’m seriously allergic to them. Our poultry farmer has many barn cats, and if they are out and about when we go to pick up our eggs, I’ll stay in the car – if they touch me at all, I’ll spend the next 6 hours unable to breathe through my nose and with my eyes swollen nearly shut.

  4. We also have something of a menagerie and I am also sensitive to smells. I may have to check this litter out after I do a little research.

We try to find the most environmentally friendly litters we can that aren’t helaciously expensive and that Kingsley, our kitty, is actually willing to use.

  5. I have two cats & I scoop 2-3 times a week and completely change the litter box once a week. I’m not sure if that’s normal. I use the multi-cat liter from Tidy Cats and it works pretty well.
I was never a cat person until I met our cats, now I am a certified cat lady.

  6. I would just say I’m not a pet person. I used to be, but I don’t know – I guess I’ve just turned into a grumpy old adult that doesn’t want to be bothered!

That being said, we do have a dog. And she is a really good dog, and great for our family. Just as long as I don’t have to take care of her! So far – so good!

My dad hated cats and I always liked them to spite him…but I’m not much of a cat person now either.

  7. We have a cat but I have no idea what kind of litter he uses. JR is in charge of the litter box. I can say that whatever litter he buys must be good because I can’t smell the it at all.

  8. Aaaaachoooooo! I Love cats and they usually love me, but I’m so allergic! 🙁 So I am a dog owner myself! Fuzz but reminds me of my mums cat Marmalade, not in looks, but in the fact that she has to sit on whatever you are doing in front of you! lol

  9. Not a cat person myself ;( But I don’t hate them, I hate the smell as you mentioned, and I hate cat litter more, so no cats for us! Though, like you said they are really more easy to have for traveling and less work from myself. Though I still prefer pee and poop to be going down the toilet or out in the yard 😉 Thanks for stopping by!

  10. Your cats are so cute but I am just not a cat person. And I think the main reason is the smell. So hooray for finding something to keep the smell gone!

  11. I’m not that fond of cats but I don’t despise them. It’s just that they have a bigger tendency to be messy than dogs. But I can’t deny it, your cats are so cute that I want to take one as my pet.

  12. I was never a cat lover until I began volunteering at the SPCA. I ended up adopting my cat Anikan and fell in love. I also love dogs and would love to get one but I’m scared how Anikan will act. He is quite spoiled and territorial.
