If I could ‘un-friend’ Mother Nature, I would.

She’s been sending the Pacific Northwest an overabundance of snow, but completely bypassing us here in PA when we should have gotten at least one good snow day by now. Her menopausal hot flashes are still present – we’ve been having freezing temperatures for days, followed by a balmy warm-up in the 50’s (with rain) followed by more freezing weather. It’s no wonder Princess Nagger and I have been hardpressed to get rid of our never-ending colds.

And then there’s this:

I’m sure you’re all wondering why I posted a picture of my Christmas tree, particularly when there’s only a week-and-a-half left of January.  Because that, my friends, is still up in my living room.  Of course the wrapped gifts are now unwrapped, but everything is still there – including the rolls of paper to the right.  Plus extra gifts that were received and not yet put away (which makes it look a lot messier than the picture above, but I’m not crazy enough to take a picture of that.)

One of the reasons is because Mother Nature has been belligerent in her Menopausal state.  When I’ve had some free time that would allow me to tackle the removal of Christmas from the living room, Mother Nature has deemed it to be a rainy day.  No way I’m schlepping the tubs and boxes needed from the shed to the house and back again in the rain.  The dogs contribute enough muddy mess to the floors as it is, I don’t need to be an additional factor.

The other reason is I still have gifts under the tree that I still need to wrap and ship to family and friends out West.  Ahem.  Procrastination, much?  So hopefully this weekend I’ll get all of the above done, along with the start of two more wine batches.

One can only hope.  Wish me luck.

Which brings me to this week’s question(s):

How soon after Christmas do you usually take down your decorations?  What’s the longest you’ve ever procrastinated to take back your living room?

Have a great weekend!

  2. Dude. I didn’t even put up ANYTHING this year. No tree, no decorations, no stockings! I was so sick… I gave my kids plastic bags with their stocking stuff in it this year. It was la-hame. BUT they didn’t care, so that was good. Usually, I have it all down by New Year’s Eve, after putting it up the first weekend or so in December. Any longer than that and it drives me crazy!

  3. John and Sprite have to STOP me from taking down the decorations the day after Christmas. Typically, they’ll keep me at bay until New Year’s. This last time, I had the tree stripped by Christmas night and all the boxes in the garage by the next morning. Felt GREAT!

  4. LOL. some of the decoration are still up and all the trees in the lower Family room are still up. I will not take the snow villages down until spring. Hubby wants to leave to trees up all year.lol. Well I am slowly getting some Christmas things put away.

  5. We usually have them down by the end of New Year’s Day – that’s pretty much my hard-and-fast rule. They don’t go up until the Sunday following Thanksgiving, and they don’t stay up past January 1. This year was the exception – we’ve just been so darn busy, that although we began taking the decorations down on New Year’s Day, it took us a week to get them ALL down and back in the basement.

  6. I thought I took a long time getting my tree down. I finally took it down about two weeks ago. But, I understand the issue. Just take the Christmas decorations off and throw on some hearts. Viola! Valentine’s Tree! 🙂

  7. When I was a kid we followed the old German tradition of putting up our tree on Christmas Even then leaving it up the 12 days of Christmas until Epiphany. Now we have conformed to what everyone else is doing and decorate the weekend after Thanksgiving and take it down a week after Christmas. Honestly though, even though the tree has been gone for a few weeks I still find here and there decorations that I forgot about that I need to put away. I need to figure out some sort of diagram when I decorate so I remember where all I put things.

  8. I usually wait it out until the 7th. This year it was I think the 8th when I got it done. I recruited hubbie to bring the box for the tree down from his high shelf in the garage, but I don’t take it in the house. I also got him to bring the rolling bins for ornaments in and after they are full he brings those do the basement. I don’t keep anything out in the barn due to the critter count. I can’t chance a squirrel will think my pine cones are treats. LOL Then I start doing the up and down loads of things to squirrel away into their hidy holes. The thing is… our hidey holes? are my son’s bathroom. Everything is kept in a corner down there.

  9. I’m still stuck on the ‘unfriend mother nature’. Think she has a circle too? ha ha ha

We are on the southern tip of a snow storm right now and because it’s pretty dry, nothing is hitting the ground. 2 hours north of us is getting slammed. I’m heading to Fla next week 🙂

    Smile pretty!

  10. I’m sorry I thought I didn’t sign up & there I am twice. Can’t leave me alone for a minute. My friend who has been teaching me to blog/blog hop says I’m ready to go out on my own. Maybe I’m not. I really like it and I want to teach my girlfri3endc when she gets here because she really wants to learn too. I’m getting so excited I can hardly wait until she’s here. Have a great weekend.

  11. The longest we keep it up is till the end of the 1st week of January. The very longest was forever ago and it was up till mid February or something like that & it was a real tree too!

  12. It always takes forever to take our christmas tree down. It still feels so nice and cozy when the tree is still up. Here in New Zealand, christmas is in the middle of summer. I’m still not used to it and I have lived here for more than 15 years 😉

  13. I’d love to unfriend Mother Nature too — I like that idea!

As far as Christmas decorations — by the time Christmas is over I am usually more then ready to get the stuff down and get my house back to “normal” so to speak. So usually within a week or two I get everything put a way — but it’s such a big job that I never look forward to it!

  14. I have mentioned this before so you may know but we always get the tree down the weekend before Jan 6. My husband wants all Christmas decorations removed before then to avoid any connection for that date and Christmas.

  15. I like to have the stuff down right after New Year’s, but my pastor told the kids once that it should be up till January 8, so we go with that. But there was a year when that freakin’ tree was still in the living room in February, so you have a way to go to catch me!

  16. Oh, also, the tree and assorted boxes only made it as far as the second floor hallway, so officially, they are not totally put away. Maybe this weekend they will hit the attic!
