A couple of weeks ago the hubby came home from work with a cardboard box looking all sad and dejected.ย  I thought maybe he’d gotten his pink slip, but no, when he opened the box, this was inside:

Apparently someone at his work discovered four baby kittens in the corner of the dumpster area – the mama cat was nowhere to be found until they removed the kittens, of course.ย  When she showed up, she was mad as a hatter – which is totally understandable, the kittens appeared to be little more than a month old.ย  They called the SPCA who sent the police – since the mama cat was all riled up and wouldn’t let anyone near her, the officers shot the cat dead.

Whaaaa?ย  I can see them being nervous about getting bit by the cat – after all, you never know about rabies.ย  But shoot it dead on a college campus?ย  I’d say that was over the top.ย  Along with my hubby, three other people stepped up and adopted the now orphaned kittens.ย  When hubby brought this little one home, it looked so forlorn and scraggly, with intense blue eyes.ย  I thought about taking a picture of him/her, but quite frankly wasn’t sure it was going to make it, and didn’t want pictorial reminders to Princess Nagger of such a cute little innocent life lost.

But now?ย  He/she is thriving nicely and growing like crazy – right now we’re keeping it in the Summer House so it doesn’t get harassed by our two adult cats in the house – so every time we’re out here on our computers (read: all the time), we have a little buddy hanging around. ย  Or trying to take over our keyboards:

Princess Nagger thought it particularly funny that it opened a Word document on my laptop simply by walking across the keyboard, and ‘typed’ what you see above.ย  We haven’t given it a name yet – we’re sort of waiting until we can figure out if it’s a boy or a girl, and to how his/her personality grows to dub him/her with an appropriate name.

We’ve tossed around the idea of naming it Lucy if she’s a girl, since she’s already getting into all sorts of trouble – like jumping from the man-loft to the first floor of the Summer House.ย  Which caused Princess Nagger to exclaim “The kitty landed on its feet!!”ย  And which probably means he/she has 7 or 8 of its 9 lives left.ย  If it’s a boy, Lucky – because obviously it is.ย  I’ll keep you posted.

  1. Awwww!!!! What a cutie pie!!! Looks like my kitty! – That is horrible that the mom was shot!! REALLY! They were afraid of a cat… I could understand a dog….. So Awesome of you to adopt him/her!!

  2. They shot the cat? I’m sure there had to be some sort of good reason. Was it foaming at the mouth or something? I’ll tell ya what if not those cops were real wimps. Give me a break they ought to be turned into the humane society. Your kitty almost looks like it has a bloody nose. What’s the red? How cute though they’re so inquisitive they’re too funny!

  3. That is AWFUL that they shot that mom kitty! I don’t get why some people get so bent out of shape when a feral cat behaves… well… like you would expect a feral cat to behave. I’m so glad there were humans who stepped up to the plate to adopt the orphans – including your husband!

  4. Very cute! And lucky it is for being found by your family…someone like me would be sad, sneeze violently, and have to pass by.

That all just makes me sad!

  5. That is one heck of a cute kitty! And obviously very smart since he/she opened a word doc and started typing. Maybe it wants to blog too?!

Kudos to you for rescuing it…if only there were more great people like you in the world ๐Ÿ™‚

  6. You should have seen my jaw just DROP when you said the police shot the momma cat. WTF?!?

Oh, and I think “Lucky” is an appropriate name, regardless of gender, simply because it was adopted by you.

  7. That kitty’s so cute.. I’m so tempted to borrow Lucky so that she can finish up doing my blog posting for me. That’s a really cool helper you’ve got.

  8. Precious kitten. Yes, shooting the momma was a lil’ bit over the top…bad them ๐Ÿ™ Glad the kittens had a happy ending~

  9. He (or she) is so adorable. I would be suckered in as well. He looks very happy on your keyboard. Just be careful, my cat has actually IMed people by walking on the keyboard.

  10. Oh, no! I agree that it was a bit over the top. ๐Ÿ™

Looks like this little kitty has learned a few tricks since coming to stay with you. Must have seen you on the computer and decided, “Hey , that’s easy! I could do that, too!” =)

  11. Awww! “L” is sooo cute! I can’t believe they shot the momma either. How awesome your hubby stepped up and adopted the poor little kitty though.

  12. He or she is so cute!!! And kudos to you and your hubby for stepping up and doing the right thing. ๐Ÿ™‚

  13. Oh, oh my… This whole post is just sooooo adorable! Thank you so much for sharing your sweet little Princess. Oh, and she is such a little tiny Princess too. And yes, a precious, small, innocent life. You have done so much good ๐Ÿ™‚ Just thank you ๐Ÿ™‚

  14. I am so happy you have a new summer house pal. What a tragedy that the momma was killed. Thats a sure fire way to teach people NOT to call the SPCA. Your husband is a great man and I am sure Lucy or Lucky is glad to have a great home. Happy, WW!

  15. What a sweet kitty – I’m so happy that this story has a happy ending! I cannot believe the beginning and what happened to the poor Mama Cat. Isn’t the SPCA supposed to be about PREVENTING cruelty to animals?

Look forward to seeing and hearing more about “Lucky / Lucy” in the future!

  16. What a little cutie! And so sad about the momma cat. Glad she has you all to take care of her (I think all cats are girls for some reason!)

  17. I’m sorry. I thought I signed up for your linky last night before work. Guess I did not, but here I am. Now, am I supposed to do something special for your meme other than sign the linky? What a kind man your husband is. That poor baby kitty probably didn’t know what the heck was going on, but I’m sure your Princess will give her all the love she needs. Thanks for hosting.

  18. Shot the Mother Cat?!?!?!?! I’m appalled!!!!! How awful!

But, CUTE kitty! I had Kitties all my life growing up. Then, somehow, I married a guy who’s allergic. Fail.

Then I had a Kiddo and he turned out to be allergic. I’m SO sad that I’ll never have a kitty again. ๐Ÿ™ I’ll just love everyone else’s!

  19. Your kitten is adorable and I just cant get over them shooting mama cat. Over the top i’d say.

Stop by and link up we’d lvoe to have you visit

  20. Ohhhhhhhhhhh, the cuteness. I had forgotten how much I love kittens until I saw this. When I was 19, I went from 0 to 3 cats in the matter of two days…. my parents stole them when I moved home after college and 2/3 of them had to be euthanized due to cancer. Wow, talk about a downer in the post.

I’m so sorry his/her mom was shot, that sounds like something PETA should be all over (although they’re nuts, this one is justified). Grrr. He looks like a HE. Unless she is a she.

  21. Okay, that kitten is too stinkin’ cute! I L-O-V-E kittens that are that size, they are so mischevious!

  22. I agree with you that shooting the cat was a bit over the top. People annoy me who don’t take care of their pets and then they are left on there own like this cat was.
I love you new kitten and I had a yellow cat once and it was the best cat ever. So glad this kitten got a great home.

  23. So very cute. I hope he/she isn’t too much of a mischief maker, but those eyes will probably make it easy to forgive almost anything.

  24. oh now that is one adorable kitty. Now for the SPCA? what happened Prevention of Cruelity to Animals part of that SPCA name?

  25. Usually orange stripped kittahs are boys but Lucky is appropriate no matter what. I’d love to have a pet hang out in my office with me. Just not my studio. The dogs do that. They lay around the floor at my feet without me noticing. Then I step back from a painting and trip on them. Can you say annoying?
