Sunday evening Princess Nagger was laying on the couch just before bedtime looking all forlorn.

PN:  “Can you please take my temperature?”

Me:  “Why?”

PN:  “I think I have a fever and might not be able to go to school tomorrow.”

Me:  “You don’t have a fever.”

PN:   “How do you know?”

Me:  “Because I wasn’t born yesterday.”

PN:  “But I don’t feel good.”

Me:  “Well, maybe you should go to bed then.”

PN:  “I haven’t felt good all day.”

Me:  “Wow, you sure did a good job hiding that fact when you were running around in the backyard all day.  Maybe you should take up acting.”

PN:  “Maaaaaammmmmmaaaaaaaa!”

Me:  “Whaaaaaaaaaaaat?”

PN:  “Well, will you take my temperature in the morning?”

Me:  “I guarantee you won’t have a fever in the morning, either.  Which means you’ll have to go to school.”

PN:  “I’m not going to be able to sleep tonight.”

Me:  “Why are you so against swimming?”

PN:  “Mama! You’re not supposed to say the S-W word!  It’s ‘you know‘!”

Me:  “Oh, sorry.  What do you have against you know?

PN:  “I just don’t like it.”

Me:  “That’s not an answer.  Besides, it’ll be good for you to know how to swim.  You love going in the pool!”

PN:  “Mama!! You said that word again.  They don’t let me use floaties.  That’s why I don’t like it.”

Me:  “I think you’ll survive an hour of swimming when you’re there for 6-1/2 hours altogether.”

PN:  “It’s only a half-hour.”

Me:  “Pffffft!  That’s only a drop in the bucket…or in this case, the pool.”

PN:  “Good one!  But I’m still not going to be able to sleep tonight.”

Me:  “Why don’t you take Rolex up with you to cuddle?  I bet you’ll feel better.”

PN:  “Can you please get me my Pteranodon?  That always makes me feel better.”

Fast forward to Monday after school:

Me:  “How was swim….er, um, I mean you know?”

PN:  “Great!  We didn’t even get in the water!”

Me:  “You didn’t get in the water today?”

PN:  “No!  They had us pretend to ‘save’ them the whole time!  And tomorrow they’ll be pretending to save us!”

Me:  “So you had fun today?”

PN:  “Yes, I did!  And it will be fun tomorrow, too!”

Did she enjoy Tuesday’s foray into the pool?  Not so much.  Because they had to “go underwater and open their eyes!” But after today she’ll only have two more days of swimming left to endure.

I’m putting this picture on the fridge for motivation:

And this one:

When Princess Nagger saw me looking at these pictures to pick for this post, she said “I’m such a weirdo!”  Apparently she’s leaning in the direction that learning to ‘you know‘ for eight whole days in first grade might not be so bad after all.  Especially if she won’t have to be so reliant on ‘floaties’ at some point.

  1. She sounds like quite the character. Kudos for having her swim so early. Being raised since a very young age in the pool, I started my daughter out right away. She is a fish now. So, now there’s two water rats in the family. Try getting us out of the pool. It wont work!

Hope she keeps up the positive attitude and swimm- you know – goes well. Best of luck!

  2. Oh she is so funny!! I mean seriously!!! I think Big Brother might react the same way to swimming without me there too though. He doesn’t know how to swim and he is too nervous to learn. She looks adorable all geared up for you know though. 🙂

  5. My son went through a phase of not wanting to go to his swim lessons. His reason? He couldn’t touch bottom. Shortly after he turned 5, he told me to sign him up again because he thinks that he would be able to touch the bottom of the pool already! 🙂

  9. Thank you for visiting my blog. I love your conversations with Princess Nagger about taking her temperature.

Once she starts swimming on her own, you won’t be able to keep her out of the water.

  10. What a hoot of a conversation! It sometimes takes a bit for kids to get over their fear of the water, but it sounds like the swim instructors are going to do a good job of making it fun.

  11. Wait until the day she realizes she’s a mermaid free of the floaties. Then she’ll appreciate the horror of the lessons.

My Dad never let us use floaties, and I was always so jealous of them. Now I understand there is method to his madness. Ahhh, but are parents are far wiser than they ever get credit for.

  13. What an intelligent child. She knows what she wants even before it happens, but Mom you’ve got the right idea there with the pic on the fridge. Take the memory that’s behind and put it up front. She’ll get the hint. Thank for stopping by me. Glad you like the pic – I thought it would give all a chuckle. It did me.
