At the beginning of the winter season, the meteorologists were speculating that the winter of 2009-2010 could be a repeat performance of the winter we had in 2002-2003.  That winter we got double our ‘average’ amounts.  The major storms started on Christmas Day (I called my Aunt in Seattle and teased her that I didn’t have to “dream” of a White Christmas since I was living it) and schools were closed every Wednesday and/or Thursday every week through February.   I scoffed when the meteorologists were predicting this winter lining up to be similar to that one, because they’re almost always wrong.

For once they were right.

The week before the first ‘official’ day of winter, we got slammed with 24 inches of snow over a weekend.   We thought maybe they were wrong after all, when the weather decided to give us an unusually warm period of time and send massive amounts of rain our way instead.  But then it got cold again, and we’ve had a few inches here and there every couple of weeks since.

Then this past weekend, as some of you know, we got 30-inches of snow Friday night and Saturday.  As I’m typing this, it has been snowing again since about 3pm this afternoon – we’ve already shoveled 6 inches off the sidewalks to try to keep things under control, but tomorrow (today) will be interesting, as we’re supposed to get an additional 18 inches of snow on top of the original 30 inches.  Jealous, aren’t you?

The past few winters snow has been pretty scarce.  When it did snow, it was either preceded or followed by freezing rain, which makes the snow not snowball or snowman worthy.  Or any fun to play in, particularly when the snow was encased in a thick coat of ice from the freezing rain.  Princess Nagger has been wishing for ‘good’ snow (OK, secretly I was wishing for it too), and apparently ‘be careful what you wish for’ is a true statement.

This was Saturday while it was snowing – Rolex was having trouble navigating in the snow.  I was kicking myself for not grabbing my video camera, because he was quite comical as he was trying to wallow in the snow:

I shared this picture yesterday, but it still cracks me up that Princess Nagger lost her boot while playing in the snow:

Saturday Princess Nagger spent time outside digging trenches in the snow – I had told her about when I was a kid and we had a miraculously significant snowfall one winter in Seattle that us kids created trenches and pathways and played Fox and the Hound.  She wanted to turn it into a dinosaur game instead.  After she was done creating her pathways, she wanted to show them to me even though the sun had recently set.  Of course I had to follow her to check out her handiwork, she was so excited and proud of herself:

The dogs really appreciated them, too – it made it much easier for them to maneuver in the backyard since the snow was as deep as they are tall (and deeper in some places):

Hubby’s car buried:

My Grand Caravan buried:

Hubby paid talked the neighbors into coming over and plowing our driveway – it definitely saved us a good 8 hours of shoveling.  So all we had to worry about was digging out the vehicles, shoveling the sidewalk around the house, the front steps and sidewalk, the back steps and patio, and the two walkways to the driveway.  Hubby was kind enough to dig out the vehicles:

Now I was able to see Princess Nagger’s pathways in the light of day:

The dogs were enjoying them:

The Back 40 looks so pretty and serene – no one ventured out that way…not even the dogs:

Princess Nagger invited me to come along on an adventure and follow her on her pathways:

She encouraged me to crawl like she was doing, but I pointed out she had snow pants on and I didn’t.  So she was OK with me walking along behind her.  She’s such a lightweight the pathways were shallower than the snow was deep – even walking I had trouble keeping up, so I hung back and took pictures as I tried not to fall on my face as each step had me sinking into the snow:

Her pathway led us all around the backside of the barn, and up the other side:

I almost did have to crawl under this low-hanging tree, but managed to scootch down low enough to stay on my feet:

At the end of the pathway there was the mountain of snow.  I knew there was no way I’d be able to crawl over that without getting stuck or sinking – after all, I’m not 7 years old.  So I went around it as best I could.  The snow next to the ‘mountain’ was hip-deep on me.  The tree branches were mocking me and grabbing at my hair, dumping snow on my head every move I made.  I almost got stuck.  I almost lost one of my boots like Princess Nagger had done the day before.  But somehow I managed to get over to the other side.  Not so much gracefully as comically.

Princess Nagger wanted me to slide down the mountain of snow on my belly like a penguin like she was doing the night before:

I politely declined and encouraged her to do it for the millionth time.

With this new deluge of snow, the trenches and pathways will need to be re-dug.  Princess Nagger is looking forward to the challenge (though she may have to wait and see if she has another Snow Day on Thursday since today those that are they are warning us of blizzard-like conditions).  The neighbors will (hopefully) be plowing our driveway again if they can get their truck with the plow out after the snow is done, so the mountain of snow will be even higher than ever – perfect for sliding like a penguin over and over again.
