randomtuesday

Our fearless Random Leader, Keely is on vacation this week, so I’m not sure if she left instructions for her nudie friends that are covering for her on her blog to host Random Tuesday Thoughts today – but on the off-chance that she cracked the whip, I thought I’d not break tradition for this week. Make sure you check out her guest posters – they are an eclectic group of fun friends, you won’t be disappointed. Nudity not required.

Mother Nature has decided our weather hasn’t been hot enough this summer, so she’s been inflicting us with some mega heat the last few days. At least here at home it’s not as unbearable as it was in Louisiana – for one, we have high speed internet that doesn’t require sitting outside in the heat to glean a bar or two from, nor do we have red ants trying to consume our feet and ankles like they did to poor Mango.

The one thing we don’t have, however, is central air. So the living room reached a high temp of about 82 (making the one window air conditioner unit work overtime), and the kitchen, dining room and upstairs bedrooms soared into the 90’s. Luckily we do have window units for the upstairs bedrooms, so at least we’ll be able to sleep comfortably in spite of the excessive heat. Just don’t plan on spending any excess time in the upstairs bathroom or you’ll melt into a pool of sweat.

Hubby did get the needed belts for the tractor, so I was able to enjoy my music and some fresh air on Saturday before it got excruciatingly hot. Note to self: Remember to set the music player to ‘play all’ or you end up listening to silence for a while before you realize it only played one artists songs. Oh, and remember to remind hubby about filling the tank in the tractor with gas before you start – so you don’t run out of gas in the middle of the Back 40 when you’re thisclose to being done.

Since it was so hot yesterday, Princess Nagger and I spent a majority of the day indoors. She was insistent that I play Sly 2 for her while she watched. For hours. My hands are more sore from doing that than they get from excessive typing or weeding or anything else. Go figure. It was a nice bonding moment, though, because she’s a great cheerleader, and when there were jobs she could manage on her own, she had lots of fun getting through those. She’s been on a Sly kick lately for some reason – and while I’ve played all 3 versions eighty-million times, it’s still fun to play while she’s overseeing the game because it’s like playing it fresh. Mostly.

All that game playing kept me away from my computer yesterday – I’m definitely counting down the days until school starts. Only 15 days. It’s going to be a big change for her (and me) with her being in school all day vs. last year’s 3.25 hours.

My weeds are still running rampant in my flower beds. I specifically left the ones alone in the one flower bed that the voles have taken up annoying residence under. They ate all my flowers and good plants – but they’ve left the weeds alone. You’d think they’d be appreciative of the yummy food I supplied them and would help me out by clearing out the weeds, but no such luck. I still haven’t figured out how to get rid of them short of stuffing some sort of explosives in their holes and blasting them out. But I worry that it will damage the hand dug stone well that is near their tunnels. At least the rest of the yard looks great after all the hard work hubby and I did over the weekend, so that’s a good thing.

Speaking of hubby – I mentioned he forgot our anniversary last week and I was feeling hurt and angry. I’m over it. I realized that I should shoulder some of the ‘blame’ for that, because all the other ‘special events’ prior I had reminded him of those, and gave him a ‘list’ of things that I would appreciate. This time I didn’t. Since we lovingly refer to him as the ‘Absent Minded Professor’, I should have known better. So when other ‘special events’ loom in the offing, you can bet I’ll be reminding him – and giving him lists. Then he won’t be in the dog house even mentally speaking.

I think that’s enough randomness for the week – my brain is a puddle of goo from the heat, and my computer isn’t liking it so much, either, since it’s been giving me the Blue Screen of Death a lot lately. Twice on Saturday, once on Sunday and once yesterday. So far so good today, so here’s hoping it’s not going to be time for me to FDISK it and reinstall everything (fingers crossed).

Don’t forget to stop by the Un-Mom‘s place and harass her guest posters….I’m sure she’d appreciate it while she’s on vacation so her guests will feel just as loved as she is. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  1. My Mommer, Nurse Meme, God Rest Her Soul, swore that if you mix urine, dawn dishwashing detergent and vinegar in a milk jug then pour it down the hole the critters won't come back. Now let me interject here that she would go out to Trooper Bob's wood shop and demand that he pee into the milk jug so she could get rid of the voles. Do you think you could get The Absent Minded Professor to do the same? ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. I LOVE this post. We've been dying here to in Washington, no clue what happened there.

Yeah for the belts, not so yeah for the gas shortage :(.

Sounds like you're having fun even with it! Thanks for stopping by I'm glad you enjoyed the recipe ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. looks like you had some fun time along with dear daughter..

i am glad you have forgiven your hubby…these things happen to a lot of us…its alright..

  4. all that game-playing really proves how cool you are! oh, goodness, stacy, i don't know if i can stand playing sly2 eighty million times! (the boys have to make me, lol)

  5. It really is hard to get used to sleeping without air conditioning wen i gets that hot! Even a window unit is a blessing.

  6. Ugh…hope you get some relief from that heat soon!

The video game with Princess sounds like a good time!

  7. Oh, my – I think I melted into a puddle just reading this post! Nor are you alone; we've had record highs here in Podunk for the last couple of days, too.

And Gladys, if you mixed urine, dawn dishwashing detergent and vinegar in a milk jug and put it anywhere near me, I wouldn't come back either.

Do you think it would work on the grubs that are intent on eating our back yard?

  8. I'm "officially" representing Keely today…consider her represented.

I can't imagine not having central air, I'd die. I always think it's so weird when I go up north and they have window units. Oh, and my SIL has the heat coming up through her baseboard and I thought her house was haunted with all of the cracking. That was a sleepless trip.

I paid some of the local FFA girls to weed my entire yard three weeks ago and the weeds are coming back already. The point is, weeds will reign supreme and there's not a damn thing we can do about it.

  9. We don't have central air either. This house was built in 1953. We have window units too. They work most days. But down here in VA we feel ya on the heat. Suckith.

  10. Sorry about the heat! For once here in Cali, it's been rather cool, in the high 80's. rare for Sunny So. Cal.

  11. I've had sore hands/fingers from video games too. J-Man has wanted help in Mario Kart sometimes. Although I don't know why he asks me for help as he usual beats me when we race.

No central air here either. It's been so cool up until a few days ago then the humidity came. I made DH put in the ac units and have been enjoying the cool air ever since.

School in 15 days? We don't go back until 9/9. Once you get used to those days alone, you'll be enjoying them. I know I do :)!

  12. The wacky weather everywhere is one more sign that the Aztecs were correct. 2012 is getting closer everyday.

As for the weeds, I am leaving them in the garden. That way there is absolutely NO CHANCE whatsoever those damned ants will find my feet, or hands, or any other body part.

  13. It's been the 3 H's here in CT. Last night I fell asleep on the couch, and it must have been 75 degrees and sticky at 5:30 AM. I woke up feeling gross, walked over to the A/C, turned it on in my stupor, and fell back asleep.

I only have A/C in the living room, sadly. No central air for moi, either.

  14. Oh no! No A/C? I would die.

On second thought, I would pack, grab the kids and head to the nearest hotel STAT vowing not to return until central air was installed.

    Maybe it's just me?!

    Loved your RTT post!

  15. I have never forgotten our wedding anniversary! However, one year I was running late, ran into a store bought a box of candy and grabbed a card from the "Anniversary" card slot… Signed it in the dark, and walked in and gave them to my wife. She loves candy, but was pretty sore about the Birthday card…some dope put it in the Anniversary card slot…then this dope bought it!

  16. Weeds are running rampant here on account of the ungodly heat!! Luckily we have central air!

  17. Geez, I didn't realize you didn't have air. The humidity can be so oppressive. Good thing fall is just around the corner.

My kids used to love watching me play videogames too. That was before it was all 3D. Now it just makes me feel nauseous so I can't do it.

Is a vole like a mousy mole?

  18. I remember the days when not playing the game but "watching" someone play was as entertaining as TV. I was more of a watcher than a player when it came to Nintendo and Sega.

  19. Yup, I'm with Jan. The heat officially sucks. Up here in the burbs we don't get enough hot weather to justify central air. So, window unit it is. PB actually gave in and let LG sleep in our room for the past few nights with the air on…

Glad the back 40 finally got its due.

  20. could not live without ac. i guess i'm a little spoiled. lol. but we're in fla and with no air i would prolly look like a fried egg on the sidewalk ๐Ÿ˜‰

  21. Why does it always happen that you run out of gas when you are almost done! UGH.

Your game playing all day with Princess Nagger made me jealous. ๐Ÿ™‚

  22. I've been hearing that my neighbours stuff Mothballs in the vole holes, maybe it would work?

  23. It's been so hot here too, well all until this week we had rain and cold LOL but now it's boiling hot!
I have to remind my hubby about everything as well LOL

  24. Try and stay cool — well, you're already cool ๐Ÿ˜€ – meaning physically cool.

Our indoor temp was 86 on Saturday, after my husband cut the A/C line while working on his new storage closet. That was fun ๐Ÿ˜‰

Def. remind your husband of those special days in the future because even mental doghouse visits are not pleasant….

  25. It is unbearable here in LA!! OY!
Thankfully it has been raining a bit and so it cools down just some.

Love the change in attitude with hubby.

I'm wondering if I should do the same.

I hope you get some relief form the heat.

  26. B has already told me he's not into "events" and if I want something to be "made a big deal of" I must give him a heads up. I'm okay with that. ๐Ÿ™‚

  27. For our anniversary, I had been pointing out things in shops that would be nice to have for a gift. I was very excited that he actually went back to buy the picture. I love it. Very colorful and brightens up the room.

Princess Nagger is going to love school!! She will be a huge social butterfly. I am excited about her new adventure.

I do not like your blue screen of death!!!!!!!! A little scary!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fall is around the corner. Just a couple more weeks of heat to endure. ๐Ÿ™‚ You can do it!!!!!

  28. Ooh girl, I would still be pissed about the anniversary. You shouldn't have to remind him about any of the important things!

And will you never learn your lesson about checking to see if the tractor is filled with gas?

OMG, I would DIE without central a/c. I keep my house as a frosty 72.

    Justine ๐Ÿ˜ฎ )

  29. I was looking for a new kid friendly game for Bubba – he beats everyone I give him, that looks like something I just might get him. Thanks!

  30. It's too hot to do much but still indoors under the a/c so I do feel your pain. With a 2 year old, getting her to understand that it's too hot outside is next to impossible. I remember the days of finger cramps from playing video games.

  31. I'm REALLY not diggin mother nature this week… not only with the weather ;-)….

    yikes, tmi.

    later!!

  32. Why do they do that with the video games? Mine has a Barbie horseback riding game. Ugh. It is awful. I've never seen the Sly games. I wonder if they make them for xbox or wii. I'll have to look. It is hard to find kid friendly stuff.

  33. This summer cold has me shivering in 95 degree heat! I'm actually looking forward to some hot soup once the kid goes to bed.
It feels like just last week you were wondering about how you would spend your summer!

  34. this summer has gone by way to quick…not looking forward to my play mates going back to school…

  35. I honestly don't know what I'd do without central air. It's been so hot this summer in Florida.

And, well done you on forgiving the anniversary slip-up.

  36. I remember the fun days of playing a video game with my little munchkin and him begging me to play all day and night with him. And now he plays games with controllers and codes and stuff that I just can't keep up with!!

  37. I occasionally get wrangled in to playing the hard parts of video games for my kids, problem is I don't want to let go of the controller after that. It can be quite the time suck. At least you were in the A/C.

  38. I love playing games with my kids – and watching them play, like my son with Halo 3. I play Tetris with him all the time and he kicks my butt and loves doing it, and loves watching me get mad and frustrated, and telling him we need to play one more round so I can beat him "this time" . . . he just laughs.
